How to Get to Shanghai

Shanghai has formed five transportation modes including railway, waterway, highway, aviation and metro, and has a super-large comprehensive transportation network.

By Air

As the most developed city in China, Shanghai has two large airports, namely, Hongqiao International Airport and Pudong International Airport. At present, there are about 1,000 flights going through the two airports, including many domestic and international flights. Hongqiao International Airport is located in Changning District, Shanghai, 13 kilometers from the down. It is a 4E civil international airport. It is one of China's three major gateway hubs and an international scheduled airport. Shanghai Pudong International Airport is located in Pudong New Area, Shanghai, 30 kilometers away from the downtown. It is a 4F civil airport and one of China's three major gateway hubs. What's more, Shanghai Airlines has opened more than 100 domestic routes and also accessed 17 medium- and long-range international and regional routes including JapanSouth KoreaThailandAustraliaSingaporeKuala LumpurMoscow, Hong Kong, Macau and Taipei.

By Train

There are four railway stations in Shanghai, namely, Shanghai Railway Station, Shanghai South Railway Station, Hongqiao Railway Station and Shanghai West Railway Station.

  • Most of the high-speed trains in Shanghai stop at Hongqiao Railway Station. The station is also the busiest high-speed railway station in China, which has realized zero-transfer with airplanes, buses, long-distance buses and subways, and has direct buses to various railway stations. 
  • Shanghai Railway Station is the largest railway station in Shanghai and the departure station of Shanghai-Nanjing Intercity Railway. The trains departing from Shanghai Railway Station runs to all over the country, including direct express trains to Beijing and Tianjin, as well as direct express trains to Hong Kong. 
  • Shanghai South Railway Station is the southern gate of Shanghai. The trains mainly pass through the Yangtze River Delta, the Pearl River Delta and the South China Economic Region.
  • Most of the cars between the Shanghai-Hangzhou line and the Shanghai-Nanjing line need to be returned from the Shanghai West Railway Station, and there are Shanghai-Nanjing high-speed trains.

Shanghai currently has two international passenger terminals, namely Shanghai Port International Passenger Transport Center and Shanghai Port Wusong Passenger Transport Center. How to Get Around Shanghai

As the most developed city, Shanghai has formed the three-dimensional inner-city network. When you come to Shanghai, it is very convenient to travel to many major sights by metro, city-bus and taxi. What's more, the visitors can go to the surrounding cities of Shanghai by long-distance bus.

By Metro

The working time of  Shanghai Metro is generally from 5:30-6:00 a.m. to 22:00-22:30 p.m. If you frequently travel in Shanghai, it is recommended to purchase a subway one-day ticket(18 yuan for 24 hours) or a three-day ticket(45 yuan for 72 hours).

Lines in Operation

As of December 2018, there were 16 Shanghai Metro lines in operation, with a total of 415 stations (including 2 maglev stations) and a total mileage of 705 kilometers.

Lines under Construction

As of December 2018, there are 4 Shanghai Metro lines under construction, which are the Phase II of Line 10, Line 14Line 15, and Line 18. The mileage under construction is 163.6 kilometers.

Lines under Planning

The latest Shanghai Metro Planning Map, "Second Public Announcement of Shanghai Rail Transit Construction Plan (2017-2025) Environmental Impact Assessment" shows that from 2017-2025, 9 new lines will be built in the next 8 years to cover Minhang DistrictBaoshan District, etc., including Line 19Line 20Line 21, Line 22, Line 23, Line 24, Line 25, Jiamin Line and Airport Express.

Shanghai Transportation – Taxi is plentiful in Shanghai and the market competition has driven taxi fare down to affordable prices for the average resident (¥14( ¥18 after 11 p.m.) for the first 3 kilometers). Taking a taxi is a fast and convenient way to get around Shanghai. The city, has the best-managed taxi service in China. Most cabbies know their way around and expertly negotiate the city's busy traffic. Taxis are usually readily available, but hailing one in rush hours is difficult and on rainy days is almost impossible.

As many bridges, tunnels, and subways are built, people have much more choices when traveling across the Huangpu River. However, ferryboats with 100-year's history are still popular choices for pedestrians and cyclists because of their convenience and low price.

At present, there are in total 19 ferry lines serving nearly 40 ferry stations along both sides of the Huangpu River, providing links between Pudong and Puxi.

Huangpu River Cruise

Huangpu River, a symbol of Shanghai, originates in Dianshan Lake and empties into the Yangtze River at Wusongkou (estuary of Wusong River), which divides Shanghai into its eastern and western parts.
