Why is Twin Pagoda Temple So Special?

Originally called Yongzuo Temple, the two great pagodas in this temple were more impressive for people. So people began to call it Shuangta (Twin Pagodas) Temple gradually. With the time past, the Twin Pagodas Temple had replaced the Yongzuo Temple and became famous till now.

Where is Twin Pagoda Temple

Twin Pagoda Temple is located in the southeast Taiyuan, about 4 km away from the Taiyuan City.

History of Twin Pagoda Temple

The east tower was built in 1597 and the west tower was built in 1612. This pagoda was built by a senior monk named Buddha Deng. In the 20th century, the severe weathering that Dongbao Pagoda has been guaranteed since its construction caused the pagoda to deviate from its center of gravity by 2.87 meters. In 1995, experts began to try to correct this tendency. They successfully corrected the tilt of the pagoda by removing soil from under it.

Main Attractions of Twin Pagoda Temple

Each pagoda in the temple has 13 stories and is entirely made of bricks and stones. The exterior is carved into octagon and decorated with exquisite cornices. An internal staircase has been added so that tourists can climb to the top of the pagoda and look far away.

All the buildings in the temple are made of bricks. Brick pillars and brackets perfectly demonstrate the characteristics of ancient Chinese architecture. It is worth mentioning that there are a number of precious stone tablets preserved here, which contain the calligraphy of famous calligraphers of all ages in China, such as Wang Xizhi (303-361), Yan Zhenqing (709-785), Liu Zongyuan (773-819) and Su Dongpo (1037-1101).

Best Time to Travel Twin Pagoda Temple

The best time to pay a visit is in spring (April and May)

Because it is the peony blooming season since the Ming Dynasty. It is said that these beautiful flowers were planted in the Ming Dynasty. Their beauty really makes this ancient temple more elegant and charming.
