Yinding Bridge in Beijing

Yinding Bridge

Yinding Bridge, a single-span stone arch bridge, is located in the narrow waterway of Qianhai and Houhai of Shichahai in Xicheng District. This bridge is 12m long, 7m wide and 8m high as well as 5m in span length. There are 5 hollow handrails carved with cloud pattern and 6 balusters carved with flower pattern.

Why is Yinding Bridge So Special

It gets the name of Yinding/Silver Ingot Bridge as it is in the shape of a silver ingot. Small as it is, this bridge is of great reputation. Originally built in the Ming Dynasty, this bridge faces Houhai in the west featuring unmeasured vastness and glistening surface, and thus has panoramic views over the Western Hill which seems be close enough to touch. “Viewing the Western Hill at Yinding Bridge” is one of the eight amazing sceneries in Beijing. Yinding Bridge has been listed as key cultural relics protection unit of Xicheng District.

Introduction of Yinding Bridge

Yinding Bridge is a single-arch stone bridge spanning south to north at the intersection of Qianhai Lake and Houhai Lake. Although the bridge’s appearance doesn’t raise eyes, it still holds its prominent place as one of the eight great sights of ancient Peking and a place to view the mountains in the distance. The bridge is also a transit point between Prince Gong’s Mansion, the former residence of Song Qingling, the Fire God Temple and the Lotus Market. Crossing the bridge westward onto the northern edge of Houhai lake, you can pop into a bar in the evening and feel the charm of Beijing nightlife.

In the evening, standing on the Yinding Bridge provides the best view of Shichahai Lake. In summer, you can go boating on the lake and songs and music can be faintly heard coming from them. Some young people like to float small paper boats with lit candles inside on the water.
