Why is Yellow Dragon Cave So Special?

Yellow Dragon Cave, also known as Huanglongdong in Chinese, is a typical karst cave in the east of Suoxi Valley Nature Reserve in Zhangjiajie. Yellow Dragon Cave is just like an underground “magical palace”, featuring a wide cave, deep and secluded underground rivers, hanging waterfalls and dense stone bamboo shoots, and showing a style of its own.

Yellow Dragon Cave is located at Hekou Village, Suoxiyu Town, Wulingyuan District, Zhangjiajie City, and it is about 40 km from Zhangjjiajie City.

There are many tourist buses that depart from Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station which is near Zhangjiajie Railway Station to Wulingyuan Scenic Area every a few minutes. The journey takes around 50 minutes and the fee is about CNY 12. Upon arrival, change to the sightseeing bus shuttling inside the scenic area to get there.

Dragon Dance Palace

Covering an area of 6,000 square meters, Dragon Dance Palace (Wulong Ting舞龙厅) is the smallest hall among 13 halls in Yellow Dragon Cave. Legend has it that Dragon King holds a grand dancing party there every year. You can find many stalagmites standing there.

Xiangshui River

It has a total length of 2,820 meters (3084 yards), an average water depth of 6 meters (6.6 yards), a maximum depth of 12 meters (13 yards), and a water temperature of around 16°C (61°F) all year round. It is an ideal living environment for the rare animal giant salamander in China.

Dragon’s Palace

It is located on the forth layer, and is 16-30 meters taller than the third layer. The Dragon’s Palace is the biggest and oldest hall in the cave. With a floor space of 1, 4000 square meters, and a height of 40 meters on average, the Dragon’s palace is magnificent with 1705 stalactites and columns, which are densely distributed. Some look like persons in different postures.
