The Huangdaxian Shengjing Scenic Area (黄大仙圣景) is located in the southern part of Xiqiao Mountain (西樵山), Nanhai District, Foshan City, Guangdong Province, China. Covering an area of approximately 420,000 square meters, the scenic area is centered around the figure of Huang Daxian (黄大仙), a renowned Taoist immortal. The area is designed with a focus on the legendary figure of Huang Daxian and Taoist culture.
About Huang Daxian (黄大仙)
Huang Daxian, originally named Huang Chuping (黄初平), was a famous Taoist priest during the Jin Dynasty (265-420 AD). He became known for his medical skills, using a gourd to carry medicine and curing diseases. He was revered as “Chisongzi” (赤松子), which means the “Red Pine Immortal,” a title honoring his profound connection to Taoist traditions. Huang Daxian’s story is significant not only in Guangdong but also in Hong Kong, where many people still worship him today.
Natural and Cultural Landscapes
The scenic area is rich in both natural beauty and cultural landmarks:

- Hehe Bridge (和合桥): This bridge symbolizes harmony and unity, and is associated with the Taoist immortal figures Hehe Erxian (和合二仙).
- Bagua Square (八卦广场): A large square designed in the shape of the Bagua (八卦), a Taoist symbol, representing the balance of the universe.
- Unique Mountain Gate (特色山门): The mountain gate is a distinct architectural feature modeled after traditional Xiqiao residences, symbolizing the philosophical concepts of Taoism.
The Heaven and Earth Echo Altar (天地回应坛) is designed using Taoist principles, representing the idea of “Heaven is round, Earth is square.” Visitors can stand on the altar, make a wish, and hear the “echo” of their prayers, symbolizing the responsive nature of the universe.
Huang Daxian Statue (黄大仙圣像)
One of the central features of the scenic area is the magnificent Huang Daxian Statue, which stands at a towering height of 28 meters and weighs over 7,000 tons. Made from over 3,000 large pieces of marble, the statue is a majestic representation of Huang Daxian, who is depicted wearing a Taoist crown with a compassionate expression. The statue is set against a stunning natural backdrop, with seven small hills in front, forming the “Seven Stars Accompanying the Immortal” (七星伴仙) formation.
Visitors can reach the statue by climbing 99 steps of a ceremonial staircase, symbolizing spiritual ascent. In his left hand, Huang Daxian holds the “Nine-Pearl Rejuvenating Pill” (九珠还魂丹), a symbol of healing. In his right hand, he holds a whisk, representing his role in dispelling suffering and adversity from the world.
Historical Development
The Huangdaxian Shengjing Scenic Area was developed as part of an effort to promote Taoist culture and beliefs. Initially, it was part of the efforts of local Taoist priests, such as Liang Ren’an (梁仁庵), who established a Taoist temple dedicated to Huang Daxian in the early 20th century. This temple, known as the Puqing Altar (普庆坛), gained a large following in the region, especially in places like Shunde (顺德), Zhongshan (中山), and Taishan (台山).
In 1915, due to the instability of the times, Liang Ren’an moved to Hong Kong and founded the Sik Sik Yuen (啬色园) Taoist temple, which continues to flourish as a cultural and charitable institution. The Sik Sik Yuen temple’s success has helped spread the worship of Huang Daxian throughout Hong Kong and even to Southeast Asia and North America.
The Huangdaxian Shengjing Scenic Area was constructed with donations from the Sik Sik Yuen in Hong Kong, symbolizing the connection between the original temple and the new site in Foshan. The scenic area, which opened to the public on February 18, 1996, is designed to offer a serene environment for visitors to experience Taoist culture and enjoy the surrounding natural beauty.

Hehe Bridge (和合桥)
This bridge, located at the entrance of the scenic area, is one of the primary landmarks. The concept of “Hehe” comes from the Taoist immortal figures, Hehe Erxian, who are believed to bring happiness, harmony, and marital bliss to people. The bridge’s name is a reflection of the belief that crossing it brings peace and unity to one’s family. -
Bagua Square (八卦广场)
The entire square is designed in the shape of the Bagua diagram, an ancient Taoist symbol representing the dual forces of Yin (阴) and Yang (阳), the balance between opposites, and the interconnectedness of all things in the universe. The square is one of the largest Bagua designs in China, offering visitors a deep connection to Taoist philosophy. -
Mountain Gate (特色山门)
The mountain gate has a unique design inspired by traditional Xiqiao village architecture. It features “hooped ear” walls, a signature style of Xiqiao homes. The design is based on the Taoist principle of “Three is Great, Three is Noble,” and is decorated with symbols such as dragons, phoenixes, and cranes, all of which represent auspicious omens and spiritual protection. -
Heaven and Earth Echo Altar (天地回应坛)
This altar is designed to illustrate the Taoist cosmological view that Heaven is round, and Earth is square. Visitors can stand on the central Taiji (太极) symbol, and make a wish while experiencing the unique acoustics of the altar, which allow their voices to echo back, representing the concept of the universe responding to one’s intentions. -
Huang Daxian Statue (黄大仙圣像)
The central attraction of the area is the towering statue of Huang Daxian, located at the end of a 99-step staircase. This immense statue is constructed from over 3,000 marble blocks and stands 28 meters tall. It is a monumental tribute to the healing and protective powers of the Taoist immortal.
