Historical Changes of Divisions

On February 15, 1950, the People's Government of Sanshui County (三水县) was established. On March 1, the People's Government of Nanhai County (南海县) was founded. On March 20, the People's Government of Shunde County (顺德县) was established. On July 1, Foshan (佛山) changed from a city to a town and came under the administration of Nanhai County.

On June 26, 1951, Foshan Town was upgraded to a city.

In June 1954, the CPC Guangdong Central District Committee (中共粤中区党委) and the Guangdong Central Administrative Office (粤中行署) moved from Jiangmen City (江门市) to No. 10 Dafu Road, Foshan City. The Guangdong Central Administrative Office governed 24 counties (中山 Zhongshan, 顺德 Shunde, 南海 Nanhai, 三水 Sanshui, 番禺 Panyu, 东莞 Dongguan, 宝安 Bao'an, 增城 Zengcheng, 博罗 Boluo, 龙门 Longmen, 珠海 Zhuhai, 新会 Xinhui, 高明 Gaoming, 鹤山 Heshan, 封开 Fengkai, 怀集 Huaiji, 高要 Gaoyao, 广宁 Guangning, 四会 Sihui, 新兴 Xinxing, 罗定 Luoding, 云浮 Yunfu, 郁南 Yunan, 德庆 Deqing), 1 city (石岐 Shiqi) and 2 province-administered cities (江门 Jiangmen, 佛山 Foshan).

In February 1956, the CPC Foshan Prefectural Committee (中共佛山地委) and Foshan Prefecture (佛山专区) were established, governing 13 counties (中山 Zhongshan, 珠海 Zhuhai, 番禺 Panyu, 顺德 Shunde, 南海 Nanhai, 三水 Sanshui, 新会 Xinhui, 鹤山 Heshan, 高明 Gaoming, 台山 Taishan, 开平 Kaiping, 恩平 Enping, 花县 Huaxian), 1 city (石岐 Shiqi) and 2 province-administered cities (佛山 Foshan, 江门 Jiangmen).

In 1958, Foshan and Jiangmen were upgraded to county-level cities under the administration of Foshan Prefecture.

From November 1958 to January 1959, Foshan Prefecture was renamed Guangzhou Prefecture (广州专区).

In 1970, Foshan Prefecture was renamed Foshan Region (佛山地区), and Foshan and Jiangmen were changed to county-level cities. Foshan Region governed 12 counties (南海 Nanhai, 顺德 Shunde, 三水 Sanshui, 高鹤 Gaohe, 台山 Taishan, 恩平 Enping, 番禺 Panyu, 中山 Zhongshan, 珠海 Zhuhai, 新会 Xinhui, 开平 Kaiping, 斗门 Doumen) and the cities of Foshan and Jiangmen.

In 1983, Foshan Region was abolished, and the original Foshan Region and Foshan City merged to form a new prefecture-level Foshan City, which governed the counties of Zhongshan (中山), Nanhai (南海), Shunde (顺德), Gaoming (高明), and Sanshui (三水).

In June 1984, Foshan City governed Fenjiang District (汾江区, renamed 城区 Chengqu in 1986), Shiwanzhen District (石湾区), Nanhai (南海), Shunde (顺德), Gaoming (高明), and Sanshui (三水), and took over the administration of Zhongshan City (中山市).

From 1992 to 1994, Shunde (顺德), Nanhai (南海), Sanshui (三水), and Gaoming (高明) were upgraded to county-level cities, governed by Foshan.

In December 2002, the State Council approved the abolition of the original Foshan District, including Chengqu (城区), Shiwanzhen District (石湾区), and the county-level cities of Nanhai (南海), Shunde (顺德), Sanshui (三水), and Gaoming (高明). It established five districts: Chancheng District (禅城区), Nanhai District (南海区), Shunde District (顺德区), Sanshui District (三水区), and Gaoming District (高明区).

As of March 2024, Foshan City governs five urban districts: Chancheng District (禅城区), Shunde District (顺德区), Nanhai District (南海区), Sanshui District (三水区), and Gaoming District (高明区).
