How to Get to Xining

Xining is the transportation hub of Qinghai Province, which can be reached in many ways. Caojiabao International Airport is the only civil airport in Xining, operating flights to major cities in China. Xining serves as the intersection of Lanzhou - Qinghai Railway and Qinghai-Tibet Railway. It is relatively convenient to reach Xining by trains. Xining has many high-speed and national highways connecting with the surrounding cities, and major cities in the west have long-distance buses to Xining.

By Air

Caojiabao International Airport is the only secondary airport in Qinghai Province and an important air traffic hub on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It has opened direct flights to many major cities in China, such as Beijing, Shanghai and Xi 'an, but has not yet opened international routes.

By Train

Xining is where the Lanzhou-Xining Railway and Qinghai-Tibet Railway meet. Most trains heading for Lhasa will take a stop in Xining. Located on the Huzhu Road, next to Xining Long-distance Bus Station, Xining Railway Station is the only railway station in Xining. It has been completely put into operation after being renovated. Xining West Railway Station has ceased operation. At present, there are D, Z, T and K direct trains from Xining to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Lhasa, Urumqi, Lanzhou, Dunhuang, Zhangye, Golmud, Chengdu, Kunming and other places. In addition, there are trains to cities within Qinghai Province including Datong, Qaidam and Chaka.

By Long-distance Bus

There are internal and external transport in Qinghai links provinces: Tibet, Xinjiang, Sichuan, etc., as well as 109, 214, 227, 315 and other national highways pass through Xining, making highway transportation convenient. There are long-distance buses to cities and counties inner and outer Qinghai Province. The buses mainly runs to the cities in Gansu, and also buses to Golmud and Chaka. There are also suburb lines to Huangzhong Taer Monastery, Laoye Mountain and other destination.  There are several passenger stations in the city, which are sent to different directions.

How to Get around Xining

Inner transportation in Xining mainly relies on city bus and taxi. If you want to travel around the nearby attractions, can rental is the best choice for you to have a worry free and comfortable trip.

City Bus

The inner transportation in Xinning is quite convenient. There are lots of bus lines connecting downtown and suburb. Generally, they can be divided into three kinds: first is the common regular self-service busses that reach the downtown districts and some suburbs; second one is the Special Line (non-stop) bus, and the last one is the the buses from No.101 to No.109 are pint-size, mainly connecting the city center with suburbs and the new zone of the Southern District.

  • Special Lines
    Fare: Sepcial Line Buses are No.301, 302, 303 and 304 . The ticket price is 2 yuan and the starting station is the central square.

  • Suburb Lines
    Fare: At the "management station" Stop, there is a special bus to Taer Monastery, which takes about 50 minutes and costs 3 yuan.
    Tips: This bus line serves full seat of passengers at every departure, it is very crowded, please take care of your belongings.

Taxi

Taking a taxi to travel around Xining is convenient and it doesn't cost too much. The starting price is 8 yuan with 3km and 1.6 yuan/km over 3km. The waiting time for operation is 0.32 yuan per minute, including 0.48 yuan per minute during the peak hours of operation from 17: 00 to 20: 00 every day. Night driving (23:00- 6:00 the next day) 1.9 yuan per kilometer/kilometer. Taking a taxi within the downtown area cost about 20 yuan.
