Xi'an Climate - Seasons & What to Pack
Xi'an, located roughly in the geographical center of Mainland China, with location between a cold and hot semi-arid climate. It is hot and wet in summer with many thunderstorms, dry and occasionally snowy in winter, and prone to extended spells of rain in autumn while the warm spring can be dusty due to sandstorms. The rainy season is from July to September.
Spring(March-May)
- Weather Feature: The temperature varies widely from day to night, lower temperature in the morning and evening while the daytime goes under higher temperature, windy and occasional sandstorms.
- Average Temperature: 8 °C (46 F) in March, 14 °C (57 F) in April and 19 °C (66 F) in May.

- Recommended Tour Activities: Indoor attractions like the Terra-Cotta Warriors , Forest of Stone Steles Museum, Shaanxi Nature Museum and Shaanxi History Museum or forstry scenic spots such as Qinling Wildlife Park, Heihe National Forest Park, Zhuque National Forest Park, otherwise, you can appreciate the music fountain at Big Wild Goose Pagoda North Square Music Fountain after the sunset.
Autumn(September-November)
- Weather Feature: Cool and cloudy in autumn, with a fair amount of precipitation, but it gradually turns dry and sunny in late autumn.
- Average Temperature: 16 °C- 25 °C
- What to Bring: A long-sleeved shirt or a sweater and light coat
- Recommended Tour Activities: Cool weather is the best time to visit historical sites like Ancient City Wall, Bell Tower , Drum Tower, Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, Small Wild Goose Pagoda, and to enjoy the local snacks in Muslim Quarter.
Winter(November - February)
- Weather Feature: Dry and cold with a little snow.
- Average Temperature: The coldest time is January with an average temperature of 0 °C (32 F), and the lowest temperature sometimes drops below -5 °C (23 F).
- What to Bring: Warm clothes like down coat and wool sweaters.
- Recommended Tour Activities: Winter skating at Bailuyuan Ski Resort and Zhulinpan Ski Resort, and hot bath at Tangyu Hot Springs or annual lantern fair held on the City Wall during the Chinese New Year in January or February.
Best Time to Visit
Considering the climate and weather conditions in Xi'an, the best time to visit Xi'an is Spring and Autumn, from March to May, September to November. For tourists from southern regions, winter is also an agreeable time to visit Xi'an with less crowded scenic spots, and it is high time to experience the snowy scenes, moreover, the tour budget can be lowered.
High Season
The peak season for Xi'an tour begins in March and ends in November, when the climate and weather are agreeable for traveling. As a result, the city is crowded with tourists and some popular scenic spots are inevitably crowded. Travel costs will also be higher, as many attractions have peak season prices. June to August, although with hot weather, it is the summer holiday for students in China, so this period is also the high season for Xi'an tour.
Low Season
The off-season for Xi'an tour is from November to March of the next year. The weather is getting colder and colder, and there are fewer tourists. Therefore, the prices of air tickets, hotels and scenic spots are lower than other periods. Moreover, you can enjoy the city's snowscape and have a pleasant tour experience for it will be less crowded in most tourist attractions. Try to avoid the public holidays of China, such as May Day Holiday(May 1-3), National Day Holiday(October 1-7), Spring Festival Holiday(Usually early February), Qingming Festival(in early April), Dragon Boat Festival(in June), summer holiday (usually from July to August) and winter holiday (Jan to Feb) for students should also gain your consideration. Spring festival and national day festival are the most crowded time to travel. During these holidays, there will be a large crowd in the tourist attractions and you can't really enjoy yourself. Flights and hotels can cost three times as much than usual, and it's hard to get tickets during the Spring Festival.
