Beijing Transportation- By Train

Beijing is one of the centers of China’s rail network, with trains to most of the country’s cities. The main railways are Beijing-Kowloon railway, Beijing-Shanghai railway, Beijing-Guangzhou railway, Jingha railway and Jingbao railway. In addition, Tianjin intercity railway and Shanghai-Guangzhou high-speed railway have been built successively. It takes about half an hour for passengers to travel from the capital city to Tianjin, 4.5 hours to Shanghai and 8 hours to Guangzhou. In terms of international railway transportation, trains to Russian cities, Ulan Bator, the capital of Mongolia, and Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, and Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, all start from Beijing.

Major Railway Stations in Beijing

There are 6 main railway stations in Beijing, namely, Beijing Railway Station, Beijing West Railway Station, Beijing South Railway Station, Beijing North Railway Station, Beijing East Railway Station, Badaling Railway Station. 

Beijing Railway Station(北京站)

Beijing railway station is the intersection node of Beijing-Shanghai railway, Beijing-Harbin railway, Beijing-Chengde railway, Beijing-Yuanping railway, Fengtai-Shacheng railway, Beijing-Guangzhou railway, Beijing-Kowloon railway and other passenger dedicated lines and intercity high-speed railways. Most trains bound for northeast and east China start at this station.

Beijing West Railway Station(北京西站)

Beijing west railway station is mainly responsible for most of the normal train service to Beijing, and the departure service of Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed railway. After arriving at Beijing west railway station, you can travel to all parts of Beijing downtown by Beijing metro lines 9 and 7, as well as by bus, taxi and online ride-hailing. Most trains to south, southwest and northwest China leave from here.

Beijing South Railway Station(北京南站)

Beijing south railway station, the most modern and largest railway station in Beijing with the most trains, is the departure and arrival station of Beijing-Tianjin intercity railway and Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway. After arriving at Beijing south railway station, you can travel to all parts of Beijing by Beijing metro lines 4 and 14, as well as by bus, taxi and online ride-hailing.

Beijing North Railway Station(北京北站)

Beijing north railway station is an important part of Beijing railway hub, the starting and ending station of Jingbao railway and Beijing suburban railway line S2, as well as the departure and arrival station of Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed railway which is under construction. The Beijing-Zhangjiakou railway is expected to open on December 31, 2019.

How to Get There: Take subway line 13 and get off at Xizhimen Station. Leave from exit A2 or F2 and walk north for 3-5 minutes; or take No. 87 or 651 bus and get off at Gaoliangqiao, or No. 21, 80, 331, 375, 387, 392, 620, 691, 693 buses to Suojiafen.
Major Destinations: Baotou, Huhhot, Tongliao, Chifeng, Chengde, Qiqihar, Yanqing, Badaling Great Wall.

Note: On November 1, 2016, affected by the construction of Beijing-Zhangjiakou inter-city railway, Beijing north railway station suspended its passenger service, and the original passenger service was transferred to Huangtudian station and Changping north railway station.

Beijing East Railway Station(北京东站)

Beijing east railway station is a first-class passenger and cargo transport station under the jurisdiction of China railway Beijing bureau group co., LTD. It is an important part of Beijing railway hub. Beijing east railway station is 5 kilometers from Beijing railway station, 288 kilometers from Qinhuangdao railway station (Beijing-Qinhuangdao railway) and 251 kilometers from Chengde railway station (Beijing-Chengde railway). It mainly operates normal trains to and from nearby cities.

How to Get There: Take subway line 1 or 14 and get off at Dawang Road, then walk south for 10min; or take subway line 7 or 14 to Jiulongshan, then walk north for 10 minutes; or No. 31, 138 buses and Special Line 87 leads there.

Notes: The new Beijing east station is under construction and will open to traffic in 2021.

Badaling Railway Station(八达岭站)

It is a 10-minute walk from the Badaling Great Wall. Passengers can take the S2 train from Beijing downtown, which takes 1.5 hours. A new Badaling high-speed railway station is under construction. By 2020, when the completion of the station, travel time will be reduced to 20 minutes.
