Zicaotan Pond in Zhangjiajie
Zicaotan Pond (紫草潭), also known as Zhicao Pond (纸草潭), is located within the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (张家界国家森林公园), at the confluence of Jinjian Creek (金鞭溪) and Shadao Gorge (砂刀沟). The pond was originally named Zhicao Pond, due to the practice of local villagers washing handmade paper in the water during the Qing Dynasty.
The pond is surrounded by a stunning natural landscape, with its waters reflecting the beauty of the towering peaks, green trees, and purple stones that surround it. The area is known for its tranquil and harmonious atmosphere, with the sunlight creating beautiful reflections on the water, while the green shadows of trees sway gently in the breeze.
Characteristics of the Pond
The pond is situated in a valley made of purple-red sandstone, shaped into a trough-like form by the constant flow of water. The pond measures approximately 8 meters in length, 2 meters in width, and 2 meters in depth. The water is exceptionally clear, offering a perfect view of the bottom, where the surrounding mountains, trees, and purple stones are reflected. The scene is both serene and picturesque, creating an atmosphere of natural beauty.
A small bridge made of a complete natural boulder spans the pond, measuring over three meters in length and two meters in width, enhancing the charm of the area.
