Overview of the Performance

“Zhangjiajie in Dream” (梦幻张家界), originally named “Meiliangzhai” (梅良寨), was first staged in 2004. The theater, with a seating capacity of 1,638, showcases a professional and original ecological folk drama that focuses on promoting local culture. Since its establishment, the performance has adhered to the concept that “what is ethnic is global,” continuously exploring the essence of Zhangjiajie’s (张家界) local culture. Through superb artistic direction, the performance vividly portrays these cultural elements, allowing audiences from across China and the world to fully experience the customs and traditions of Zhangjiajie (张家界), Hunan (湖南) province.

The show features a large cast, exceptional performance skills, and has received widespread praise from audiences. Notable performers include:

  • Shang Shengwu (尚生武), a national intangible cultural heritage inheritor and the mentor of Song Zuying (宋祖英), the famous Chinese singer, and known as the “King of Xiangxi Folk Music” (湘西歌王).
  • Xiang Zuorong (向佐绒), a national intangible cultural heritage inheritor and the “Queen of Folk Songs” (民歌皇后).
  • Jin Ye (金爷爷), an 82-year-old master of the Nuo culture (傩坛高人), who has led his disciples to participate in multiple cultural exchanges between China and Europe. He even performed the traditional “Daliuzi” (打溜子) folk dance at the grand stage in London.

The performance also features Long Ye (龙爷爷), a master of the nearly extinct Nuo rituals, who showcases the mysterious and eerie art of Nuo magic.
