Why is Wuyou Temple So Special?

Wuyou Temple is a unique Tang dynasty creation that displays influences from Tibet and Nepal as well as China. The temple makes for a serene and peaceful end to your trip after battling the crowds at Leshan Giant Buddha. Built in the Tang Dynasty, the site consists of seven Buddhist palaces, including the Arhats Hall with its 500 clay figures of the Buddha’s disciples. According to legend, it was a monk from this temple who decided to carve the stone Buddha as a form of protection from the dangerous river currents.

Wuyou Temple is located at  Wuyushan, Shizhong District, Leshan City, and the Chinese address is:乐山市市中区乌尤山. The temple lies about 153 km from Chengdu (成都), the capital of Sichuan province (四川省).

Several buses make the journey from Chengdu to Leshan City each day. From there, you can hire a taxi to the scenic area. Wuyou Temple is about a 30-minute walk from the Leshan Giant Buddha.

What to See in Wuyou Temple?

In recent years, the giant sleeping Buddha formed by Wuyou Mountain, Lingyun Mountain and Guicheng Mountain has been discovered, which, adding more charm to the giant Buddha scenic spot. There’s a saying from ancient times has it that “one should first worship Emei and then visit Lingyun Temple”, the world renowned Leshan Giant Buddha is a seated Buddha Maitreya built on cliff of conjuncture of Min River, Qingyi River and Dadu River. The Buddha was built from the First Year of Kaiyuan, during the reign of Xuanzong Emperor, Tang Dynasty (713 A.D.) by Haitong who raised funds, labors and materials for purpose of receding flood and giving universal salvation, to the 19th year of Zhenyuan, Dezong Emperor, Tang Dynasty (803 A.D.), lasting 90 years.

This temple is rarely crowded, as many visitors simply go to see the Giant Buddha and then leave, so the main consideration when deciding when to visit is weather. Spring and fall offer mild temperatures with less chance of rain.
