West Sea Peak Forest in Zhangjiajie

West Sea Peak Forest (西海峰林) is located in Shentang Bay (神堂湾), Wulingyuan (武陵源), Zhangjiajie (张家界), Hunan Province (湖南省). The area is renowned for its unique landscape of thousands of oddly shaped peaks and bizarre rock formations that rise dramatically from the valley floor.

Scenic Features

West Sea Peak Forest is famous for its exceptional geological features, where towering stone peaks appear like an army standing tall. During heavy rains, it is said that the sounds of gongs, drums, shouts, and neighing horses can be heard in the valley, which are believed to be the natural sounds of a battle between the Tujia rebels and the Ming dynasty army. On clear afternoons, you may even witness a Buddhist halo (佛光) around the area. The valley remains unexplored, and its rare wildlife and unique trees are still unknown to this day.

The most notable landmark in the area is the statue of Marshal He Long (贺龙), a prominent figure in Chinese history. Located on the east side of He Long Park (贺龙公园), the statue stands over 10 meters tall and is the largest bronze statue in China. The valley beneath this statue is the breathtaking West Sea Peak Forest.

Standing before this magnificent scenery, visitors are often left awestruck. As renowned geologist Guo Da (国达) once stated, “There are many peak forests in the world, but few can compare to the sandstone peak forests of Zhangjiajie in terms of beauty.” West Sea Peak Forest is a rare geological marvel, a “jewel of the peak forest” and a “world wonder.”
