Tianbo Mansion in Zhangjiajie
TianboFu (天波府), located at the peak of the Yangjiajie Scenic Area (杨家界景区), is a magnificent platform surrounded by dozens of sheer cliffs. The grandeur of this place makes you feel as though you are standing amidst the ruins of history. Local legend holds that this is the site of the former “TianboFu” of the Yang family generals (杨家将).
The Journey to TianboFu
To reach TianboFu, visitors begin their journey from Wulongzhai (乌龙寨) and hike up to the site. The path requires climbing a nearly vertical iron ladder, which, although steep, is made safe with surrounding iron railings. Despite the intimidating ascent, it is considered safe for most visitors.
Historical Significance
Upon arrival at TianboFu, you may be surprised to discover that the “TianboFu” is actually a mountain peak rather than a traditional government office as one might imagine. The mountain’s rich history and legends are what make it so significant. According to local folklore, a descendant of the Yang family settled in this area, and the entire scenic area was named Yangjiajie (杨家界) in honor of this lineage. TianboFu is believed to be the place where twelve widows of the Yang family established their command post to quell the uprising of the Wuling Barbarians (武陵蛮).
Scenic Beauty and Surroundings
While at the Yangjiajie Scenic Area (杨家界景区), visitors can enjoy not only the grand views of TianboFu but also the stunning beauty of the surrounding landscape. Highlights include:
- Xiangzhi Stream (香芷溪): Known for its towering peaks, distant views, and deep, clear waters.
- Longquan Gorge (龙泉峡): With its impressive cliffs and natural barriers, it adds to the area’s dramatic scenery.
- Hundred Monkey Valley (百猴谷): A harmonious ecosystem where macaques and egrets coexist peacefully, highlighting the area’s biodiversity.
- “King of Vines” (绝壁藤王): Known as the “King of Vines” or “China’s Number One Vine,” this natural phenomenon is a marvel of nature, wrapping around steep cliffs.
The Suspension Bridge and Iron Ladder
Although TianboFu is not directly connected to Wulongzhai (乌龙寨), it is accessible via a carefully constructed suspension bridge that links the two mountain peaks. The bridge is approximately two meters wide and 20-30 meters long, providing a scenic route to the area. After crossing the bridge, visitors are faced with an intimidating iron ladder, which is almost at a 90-degree angle and seems to lead straight up into the sky. For someone with a fear of heights, crossing this shaky bridge and climbing the steep ladder can be a significant challenge.
Standing on the bridge, the sight of the abyss below can make your legs tremble, as though some invisible force is pulling you toward the depths. Looking down, the view is unfathomable, which only adds to the hesitation and fear of moving forward.
Majestic Views at the Peak
Despite the anxiety of the climb, the beauty of TianboFu remains awe-inspiring. From the peak, you can enjoy unobstructed views of four naturally-formed stone cliffs. These cliffs line up like an orderly army, their towering forms resembling city walls—an impressive sight to behold. The scenery is so picturesque it feels like something out of a poem, offering tranquility and a sense of serenity. However, for those with a fear of heights, simply admiring these majestic views from a distance may be the best option.
Additional Experiences
TianboFu also offers other unique experiences for visitors. Below the mountain’s entrance, many sedan bearers wait to assist tourists, expertly reading each visitor’s needs. For those who have previously ridden in a sedan, this is an excellent opportunity to enjoy a relaxing experience. The entire tour typically lasts 20-30 minutes, making it an ideal exploration for those visiting the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (张家界国家森林公园).
