History of the Solitary Beauty

The Prince Jingjiang was the master of the present prince city. He was given the title by his grandfather Zhu Yuanzhang, the creator of Ming Dynasty. It took over 20 years to build his mansion and the history is longer than the Forbidden City in Beijing. In the 257 years from the construction to destruction, all together 14 regional princes in 12 generations have lived in the mansion. In Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), it was served as the imperial examination hall. It was Sun Yat-sen’s base camp during his north expedition. At present, it is a part of the campus of Guangxi Normal University.

Main Attraction of Solitary Beauty

It is located in the ancient residence of Prince Jingjiang in the center of Guilin, Guangxi, with an area of 6100 square meters (1.5 acres). The peak is 216 meters (709 feet) above sea level and 66 meters (217 feet) above sea level. It has been a major scenic spot in Guilin since ancient times and is known as the “pillar of the southern sky”. The mountain is composed of limestone in the biochemistry of shallow sea sediments about 350 million years ago. It is named after a famous saying in Southern Dynasty (420-589) literature: “No one can surpass this beautiful solitary peak”. When bathed in the sunshine or afterglow of dawn, the mountain peak seems to be wearing purple robes and golden belts, which is the origin of its other name “Purple Jinshan”.

A 306-level stone step will take you to the top of the mountain, where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of Guilin. Here, you will also find the famous Gumei Pavilion, which is 7 meters (23 feet) high, has two floors and is supported by several red pillars.

Sanyuan Jidi Hall

Located near Zhengyang Gate, Sanyuan Jidi Hall was built for Chen Jichang. He was one of the top 15 candidates in the third-level imperial examination and is called “Sanyuan Jidi” in Chinese.  Chen Jichang was born in Lingui County, Guilin.  His success has won glory for his hometown.  In order to commemorate him, a large stone carved memorial doorway was erected on the gate of the imperial city, which was the highest honor of the successful imperial examination personnel in ancient China.

Zhuangyuan Jidi Hall

“Number One Scholar” is the title given to the candidate who won the first place in the highest imperial examination in ancient China.  The Top Scholar Jidi Hall is located in Donghuamen and was built for the top scholar Long Qirui in 1841 of the Qing Dynasty.  This hall was destroyed in 1900.  Today, it was rebuilt and opened to tourists.

Bangyan Jidi Hall

“Bangyan” was the second in the first grade of the imperial examination in the Ming and Qing dynasties in ancient China.  The Banyan Jidi Hall is located in Xihuamen and was built for Yu Zhang Jian, who won the title in Qing Dynasty.
 
A series of activities were held in these halls.  The simulated examination room of the provincial imperial examination center in Qing dynasty was set up for tourists to experience ancient examinations.  Visitors entered the examination room and answered the examination paper with writing brush. Fortunately, they became successful candidates and put on gorgeous clothes.  This is to taste the happiness of ancient examinees in ancient imperial examinations.

Best Time to Travel Solitary Beauty

The best travel time is April to October.

Guilin has a relatively low latitude. Belongs to the subtropical humid monsoon climate. Generally speaking, Guilin has a mild climate with distinct seasons and excellent climatic conditions. The annual average temperature is 19.3℃, which is said to be “less snow in three winters and flowers in four seasons”. When traveling to Guilin, the best season is from April to October each year, during which there will be two golden weeks of “may day” and “November”, which is also the peak period of tourism. Guilin with suitable climate will have many tourists, room reservation and transportation will also enter a climax, and the price will rise compared with usual. therefore, it is better to avoid this time and choose an off-season to travel and appreciate the beauty of the world.

  • Take bus 1, 2, 18, 22, 28, 89, 99, 100, 203, or 206, and get off at Lequn Crossing Station.
  • Take bus 2, 10, 11, 14, 18, 21, 24, 25, 28, 30, 203 or 206, and get off at Jiefang Bridge Station.
