Shadaogou Scenic Area in Zhangjiajie

Shadaogou (砂刀沟) is located within the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (张家界国家森林公园). The valley features a unique landscape filled with dense forests, ancient trees, wild vines, strange rock formations, steep cliffs, and interwoven peaks. The valley itself forms a “U”-shaped deep gorge, and it is known for its wild, natural beauty. The eastern and western entrances of the valley are located at Qianli Xianghui (千里相会) near Jinbian Stream (金鞭溪) and Zicao Pool (紫草潭) respectively. The area is renowned for its picturesque scenery, and the landscape is said to evoke a mythical atmosphere, earning the title of “the labyrinth of the human world” (人间迷宫).

Scenic Features and Landscape

From within the gorge, the views of the towering peaks and deep ravines are awe-inspiring, and the crystal-clear waters enhance the sense of tranquility. As you journey through, the landscape reveals itself in various stages, with peaks rising high into the sky and the natural beauty invoking the charm of legends.

Key scenic spots in Shadaogou include the following:

  • Five Maidens Worship the Teacher (五女拜师)
  • Dragon Palace Dance (龙宫舞女)
  • Golden Tortoise Climbing to Heaven (金龟登天)
  • Boy Worships Guanyin (童子拜观音)
  • Lean Tower (斜塔)

Other notable features include the mysterious “First Bridge in the World” (天下第一桥), “Heaven Suspended White Curtain Waterfall” (天悬白练), and “Mysterious Maze Platform” (迷魂台), which is said to be so beautiful it can mesmerize visitors. These iconic spots create a deep, almost otherworldly experience, with some peaks resembling weapons that seem to pierce the sky in summer, while in winter, they appear like elegant towers of jade and silver.

The Path Through Shadaogou

The entrance to Shadaogou can be found by taking a left turn from Zicao Pool (紫草潭), passing Jinbian Stream (金鞭溪), and then following the water upstream. As visitors enter the gorge, they will experience a serene yet profound sense of remoteness, accompanied only by the sounds of nature, such as the calls of birds and the gentle flow of streams. The natural tranquility is best understood through the lines of the famous Chinese poet Wang Wei in his poem Lu Chai (鹿柴): “In the empty mountain, no one is seen, but the echo of voices is heard. The return of the light enters the forest and shines on the green moss.”

The path through Shadaogou offers winding trails, crossing waters and bridges, offering a feeling of discovery akin to the famous line from the poet’s The River on the Mountain (山重水复疑无路,柳岸花明又一村), which describes how one may find their way even when it seems like there is no path ahead.

Geography and Climate

Shadaogou is located within Zhangjiajie’s Wulingyuan Scenic Area (武陵源风景名胜区) in the Yuanjiajie Scenic Area (袁家界景区), and it is characterized by a typical mid-subtropical monsoon climate (中亚热带山原型季风性湿润气候). The landscape is largely defined by steep cliffs, rich vegetation, and clear waters, all contributing to the area’s appeal as a top-tier AAAA+ scenic destination (景点级别AAAAA级).

Visitors can also find fascinating natural landmarks such as the “Lunar Rock Pass” (月亮垭) and enjoy various other outdoor experiences, including bird watching in the region’s second-largest bird kingdom in Wulingyuan.

Major Attractions

Five Women Bow to the General (五女拜帅)

Not far past “Thunder Strike Rock” (雷打岩), you will be greeted by the sight of “Five Women Bow to the General” (五女拜帅). Five peaks stand side by side, resembling five heroines ready for battle: the eldest sister stands tall, looking ahead; the second sister steps forward, closely following; the third and fourth sisters are mounted on horses, holding guns, ready for the battlefield; only the youngest sister lags slightly, her head lowered, her body slightly bent, seemingly preparing her armor…

West Gate of Heaven (西天门)

The West Gate of Heaven (西天门) is one of the five “Heaven Gates” (天门) in Zhangjiajie. It is cleverly embedded into the half-face of a mountain in Shadaogou (砂刀沟), resembling a gate leading directly to the heavens. According to legend, this was the place where the leader of a Tujia (土家族) peasant uprising, Xiang Dakun (向大坤), was defeated and forced to flee. Upon reaching the cliff and finding no way out, he was saved by the Goddess of Mercy (观音菩萨). The Bodhisattva pierced the cliff with an umbrella, creating a hole through which Xiang escaped, floating away to safety.

Monkey Cave Waterfall (猴儿洞瀑布)

This is the tallest waterfall in the Wulingyuan District (武陵源区), with a vertical drop of 130 meters. The water cascades from Moon Rock (月亮岩), falling like a long white silk, straight down through the mountains. Though the waterfall’s flow is not strong year-round, it roars during the summer rainy season, with water splashing up to several meters, transforming into mist. When sunlight hits the mist, it forms a beautiful and spectacular rainbow. If you are lucky enough to witness this, it is a true visual treat.

White Dragon Pool (白龙潭)

Below the Monkey Cave Waterfall lies the White Dragon Pool (白龙潭). Due to difficult access and perilous terrain, few people venture here. Once you enter, it feels like stepping into another world. Standing by the pool, you see a deep, blue-black water surface with ripples. The locals claim that when stones are thrown in, you can’t even hear the splash. Legend has it that the Jade Emperor (玉皇) resides above, and the Dragon King (龙王) resides in the pool below. In ancient times, villagers would kneel and pray for rain by throwing stones into the pool. Only after throwing a hundred stones would the Dragon King emerge and cause rain, after which he would return to the pool to meditate. This gives the White Dragon Pool an air of mystery.

The First Bridge in the World (天下第一桥)

Located on the Middle Terrace (中坪) above Yuanjiajie (袁家界), The First Bridge in the World (天下第一桥) is a natural marvel. Its height, span, and thrilling nature are unparalleled. The bridge consists of two towering peaks, each rising more than 300 meters, naturally connected by a huge stone slab, resembling a man-made pre-fabricated board. The bridge is about 2 meters wide and 20 meters long. Towering pines grow on the bridge, while ancient vines hang down, and beneath it is a vast abyss. When standing on the bridge, you feel a sense of awe and trepidation. Looking down, the depths seem unfathomable. The surrounding cliffs are sheer, and the sound of water splashing below creates a haunting atmosphere. As one ascends, the nerves tingle and hands shake, but the excitement of the moment is unforgettable.

The Cliff Palace (绝壁仙宫)

On the cliff outside Middle Terrace (中坪), you can clearly see a structure known as the Cliff Palace (绝壁仙宫) nestled into the rock face of the opposite high peak. This “palace” is built into the mountain and consists of three halls and two courtyards, with four floors of varying heights. The front is a large hall, the first floor; behind it are four large doors, the second floor; the second floor has small chambers, likely where the elders and monks resided. From here, the view becomes increasingly mesmerizing. If one were to open a guesthouse here, it would truly become a paradise on earth. The scenery offers the brilliance of dawn and the beauty of sunset, with a teapot of tea and books in hand, it would be a place where one could relax and enjoy life as if in the company of immortals.

The Back Garden (后花园)

At the junction of Middle Terrace (中坪) and Lower Terrace (下坪), there is a hidden landscape known as the Back Garden (后花园). As you descend the mountain, a stone garden gate appears unexpectedly. Upon entering and looking down, you will be amazed by the sight of hundreds or even thousands of stone peaks. Some tower into the clouds, some lie flat on the ground, others resemble lions, tigers, rabbits, or turtles. The peaks vary in shape, and together they create a grand, dynamic scene. It almost looks like a bustling metropolis with skyscrapers and an orderly layout. The stone garden gate even has the charm of a traditional Jiangnan (江南) garden, but it is naturally formed by nature. The sight is so breathtaking that it leaves you in awe.
