Jiuzhaigou Weather and Climate in June

Climate Characteristics

In June, Jiuzhaigou transitions into early summer, offering a mild and pleasant climate. The average daytime temperature ranges from 19 to 22 degrees Celsius (66 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit), making it ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing. However, due to its mountainous location, there can be significant temperature fluctuations between day and night, with nighttime temperatures dropping to around 9 to 15 degrees Celsius (48 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit). Visitors should pack some long-sleeve clothing for the cooler evenings. Additionally, June marks the beginning of the rainy season, so it’s advisable to stay updated on the weather forecast and prepare rain gear such as umbrellas or raincoats for unexpected showers.

Scenic Features

Jiuzhaigou is renowned for its unique natural landscapes and rich biodiversity. The area features stunning lakes, waterfalls, snow-capped mountains, and lush forests, creating breathtaking views. Particularly in June, the vegetation is lush, and the waterfalls are abundant, enhancing the area’s charm. Visitors can enjoy crystal-clear lakes, majestic waterfalls, and colorful forests.

Weather

June is the onset of the rainy season in Jiuzhaigou, with approximately 90 mm of rainfall this month. Average daily low and high temperatures are 13 °C (55 °F) and 24 °C (75 °F), respectively. Precipitation occurs on about 19 days during the month. Despite the overall temperature increase, significant differences remain between daytime and nighttime, as well as between different altitudes. The ultraviolet index is also extremely high.

Clothing

It’s advisable to bring a rainproof jacket for the early morning and evening. Wearing a long-sleeve shirt can protect your skin, and you should also consider sunglasses and a sunhat. Make sure to check the weather forecast before traveling to Jiuzhaigou. Good traction shoes are essential for walking.

Altitude Sickness

Most visitors experience altitude sickness, especially during overnight stays. The airport is located at an elevation of 3,500 meters, and most of the park lies between 2,000 meters (6,561 feet) and 3,000 meters (9,800 feet). It’s recommended to walk downhill and take precautions if you have heart disease or high blood pressure.

Things to Do

Visit Rize Valley

In June, you can hike in the upper altitude Rize Valley, which is above 2,400 meters. This area is home to colorful carbonate pools and offers more scenic views than its counterpart, Zechawa Valley. If you have time for only one, we recommend visiting Rize Valley. At this time of year, you’ll see lush greenery. Starting from the top of Rize Valley, you can hike down to Nourilang Falls, located near the junction of Rize and Zechawa Valley.

Visit Huanglong Scenic Area

Huanglong is another national park that is less frequented than Jiuzhaigou, yet many consider it more beautiful. As a UNESCO Heritage site and nature preserve, it is geographically 50 km south but requires a 100+ km drive. It sits at a higher elevation than Jiuzhaigou, with temperatures ranging from 2 °C (36 °F) at night to 13 °C (55 °F) during the day. Since there are no park buses, visitors will need to walk, but you can enjoy the hundreds of colorful ponds if you’re physically fit.

June Jiuzhaigou Weather and Clothing Guide

Weather Overview

June marks the official start of the rainy season in Jiuzhaigou, with noticeably rising water levels. The highest spot, Changhai, still showcases early summer beauty, though coolness may linger on rainy days. As the snow from the mountains melts completely, you can finally leave your down jackets behind!

Clothing Recommendations

Given this year’s cooler climate, it’s recommended to bring summer clothing along with a spring or autumn-weight jacket. Be flexible in adjusting your clothing based on daily weather conditions. Due to significant temperature differences between day and night, ensure you take sun protection measures, including a sun hat and sunglasses!

Footwear Advice

Comfort is key for footwear since the park’s shuttle buses operate like city buses, requiring some walking to board. There is only one restaurant in the park, located at the central station, Nourilang Service Center, offering noodles, rice dishes, and boxed meals. Alternatively, you can bring snacks, as hot water and bottled water are available in the park.

Transportation Tips

The park offers various shuttle services, including direct buses to the highest point, interzone buses, and VIP charter options. It’s advisable to board a shuttle at the entrance for a more time-efficient and energy-saving experience!

Additional Tips

For visitors planning to visit Huanglong, be sure to pack a lightweight down jacket or a waterproof jacket to guard against the chill brought on by rainy weather, as it tends to be colder there than in Jiuzhaigou!
