Hekeng Tulou Cluster includes six square Tulou, including Chaoyong building, Yangzhao building, Yongsheng building, Shengqing building, Yongrong building, Yonggui building; and 6 round Tulou, including Yuchang building, Chungui building, Dongsheng building, Xiaochun building, Yongqing building, Yuxing building. The earliest Chaoshui building was built in 1549.

Brief Introduction of Tulou

A tulou is usually a large, enclosed and fortified earth building, most commonly rectangular or circular in configuration, with very thick load-bearing rammed earth walls between three and five stories high and housing up to 800 people. Smaller interior buildings are often enclosed by these huge peripheral walls which can contain halls, storehouses, wells and living areas, the whole structure resembling a small fortified city.

Yuchang Building

Yuchanglou, or Yuchang Tulou (Chinese:裕昌楼), is an ancient building in Nanjing County. Built in 1368 in later Yuan Dynasty and early Ming Dynasty with an area of 2289 square meters, Yuchanglou is the existing largest and oldest round earthen building in Nanjing County.  It is famous for its sloping pillars, probably a manufacturing defect, and yet Tulou Yuchanglou has been standing for over 600 years!

The Layout of the Tulou Cluster

Tulou Cluster is located in the side of mountain foot with less than 1 square kilometer, which is the most intensive one in Fujian. Since the completion of hekeng Tulou Cluster, in addition to normal maintenance, the walls, structure and internal structure and external look of 14 Tulou have remained unchanged.

Chaoshui Building

The earliest Tulou building in the Tulou Cluster is Chaoshui Building, which has a history of more than 400 years. This earth building is a three stories tall Tulou and 11.3 meters in height. There are still 8 families and 48 people living in the building.
