Why is Dadi Tulou Cluster So Special?

Dadi Tulou Cluster is composed of three Tulou buildings, they are the  “king of Tulou – Eryi Tulou”, “Nanyang Tulou – Fujian Tulou Museum” and “Dongyang Tulou – the livable model”. Dadi Tulou Cluster is an important part of the world cultural heritage “Fujian Tulou“. All three Tulou were built by the Jiang family. They built different buildings according to the layout of the mountain.

Brief Introduction of Tulou

A tulou is usually a large, enclosed and fortified earth building, most commonly rectangular or circular in configuration, with very thick load-bearing rammed earth walls between three and five stories high and housing up to 800 people. Smaller interior buildings are often enclosed by these huge peripheral walls which can contain halls, storehouses, wells and living areas, the whole structure resembling a small fortified city.

Two Yi  Tulou

Er Yi Tulou, known as the “king of Tulou”, was built in the Qing Dynasty. It is one of the most well preserved Tulou with the most complete historical value. It covers an area of 9300 square meters, The whole building is divided into 16 units with 213 rooms. There are many cultural relics in the building, such as 226 pieces of murals and 349 pieces of wood carvings and so on. 

Nanyang Tulou

Nanyang Tulou is located in the southeast of Er Yi Tulou, about 150 meters away, was built in the Qing Dynasty. Covering an area of 3100 square meters, there are 4 units in Nanyang Tulou, each unit has 7 rooms and 96 rooms in total. It not only enjoy a view of green mountains and waters in front of the gate, but also has a back garden built on the back of the building. 

Dongyang Tulou

Dongyang Tulou is located in the west of Nanyang Tulou, which is built in Qing Dynasty. It is a huge earth building, covering an area of 2200 square meters. There are 36 rooms in the main building, The rooms on the left and right are kitchens and dining rooms.
