How to Get to Zhangjiakou

By Air

Zhangjiakou Ningyuan Airport is located 9 kilometers southeast of Zhangjiakou city center in Hebei province, China. On June 9, 2013, Zhangjiakou-Shijiazhuang route made its first flight, marking the successful completion of the test flight at Zhangjiakou Airport. It only takes 40 minutes to travel between Shijiazhuang and Zhangjiakou. At the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, the Zhangjiakou in Hebei will undertake 76 competition venues and supporting infrastructure construction. To this end, Zhangjiakou Airport started the renovation and expansion project in 2018 and completed the main project by the end of 2019. At present, it enter the decoration phase. The reconstructed Zhangjiakou airport will not only add many domestic routes, but also have international routes.

Zhangjiakou Airport currently operates 11 routes and 13 navigable cities, namely Shijiazhuang, Shanghai, Xiamen, Shenzhen, Shenyang, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Xian, Chengdu, Chongqing, Harbin, Dalian, Haikou. In addition, with the increase of flights from Zhangjiakou to Shijiazhuang, travelers can reach more than 70 cities at home and abroad via transfer at Shijiazhuang. When the reconstructed Zhangjiakou airport opens, it will not only add many domestic routes, but also have international routes.

Airport Transfer

  • Airport Shuttle Bus: The departure time of the airport bus is 7: 40, 9: 10, 11: 40, 14: 55, 17: 30, 18: 35, 21: 00 every Monday to Sunday, with no stopover. The one-way journey takes about 20 minutes. At the same time, at 12: 30 on every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday, and 16:00 on every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, one more shuttle bus is added.
  • City Bus: Tourists can take bus No. 23 and 107 to travel between Zhangjiakou airport and downtown area.
  • Taxi: It takes about 30 minutes to travel between the airport and Zhangjiakou downtown at the cost of about 30 yuan.

By Train

In 1905, the construction of the Beijing-Zhang railway was started, and in 1909, the Beijing-Zhang railway was officially opened to traffic. It is the first trunk railway designed and built by the Chinese themselves. There are two railway stations in Zhangjiakou. And in 2019, three high-speed railways went into operation: Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed railway, Datong-Zhangjiakou high-speed railway and Zhangjiakou-Hohhot high-speed railway.

What's more, the Taizicheng(Chongli)-Xilinhot railway starts from the Taizicheng station in the south, passes through Chongli District, Zhangbei County and Guyuan County of Zhangjiakou, and enters the territory of Xilingol League via Zhenglan Banner and Xilinhot City. The total length of the railway is 384.083km. The project is expected to start in 2020. In the future, Zhangjiakou will built a railway to Huanghua port via Baoding.

  • Zhangjiakou South Railway Station张家口火车南站
    Zhangjiakounan(South) Railway Station, formerly known as Shalingzixi Railway Station(沙岭子西站), was built in 2013 and put into use in 2017. It has a total construction area of about 5000 square meters and mainly operates ordinary speed trains in the direction of Beijing-Baotou, Fengtai District-Shacheng Town and Zhangjiakou-Jilin railways.

  • Zhangjiakou Railway Station张家口火车站
    Zhangjiakou Railway Station, formerly known as Zhangjiakou South Railway Station, was completed and put into operation in 1957. It was renovated in November 2017 and completed and opened to traffic on December 30, 2019. It is a common station for normal speed trains and high-speed trains. It mainly operates emus trains in the direction of Beijing-Zhangjiakou intercity, Zhangjiakou-Hohhot passenger dedicated line, Zhangjiakou-Datong passenger dedicated line, and ordinary speed trains in the direction of Beijing-Baotou, Fengtai District-Shacheng Town and Zhangjiakou-Jilin. 

Zhangjiakou High-speed Trains

In 2019, Zhangjiakou entered the first year of high-speed rail. The Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed rail, Zhangjiakou-Datong high-speed rail and  Zhangjiakou-Hohhot high-speed rail form a "cross" high-speed rail network in Zhangjiakou. Chongli railway is a branch line of Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed railway, which mainly serves the core area of Chongli competition in Zhangjiakou venue of Beijing Olympic winter games. The total length of the line is 52.2 kilometers. After completion, it will be able to travel between Beijing and Zhangjiakou and Chongli within one hour. 

The high-speed railway line connecting Beijing and Zhangjiakou, the co-host city of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, went into operation on December 30, 2019. It starts from Beijing North, via Qinghe, Shahe, Changping, Huailai, Xiahuayuan North, Xuanhua North, and terminate at Zhangjiakou South. At the same day, Zhangjiakou-Datong high-speed railway and  Zhangjiakou-Hohhot high-speed railway also put into use.

Zhangjiakou - Beijing Shuttle Bus

On April 15, 2019, an inter-provincial passenger line between the Beijing Capital Airport and Zhangjiakou Airport has been opened. The total length of the line is 210 kilometers and it will run for 200 minutes one way. One-way fare 100 yuan/person.

How to Get around Zhangjiakou

By Metro

Metro is the most convenient means of transportation in modern cities. Six cities in Hebei will build metros including Handan, Qinhuangdao, Tangshan, Baoding, Zhangjiakou and Langfang. Six lines of Zhangjiakou Metro will connect Zhangjiakou, which brings convenience for people to travel and lightens the burden of urban traffic. Below is the plan of Zhangjiakou metro.

By City Bus

Zhangjiakou's public transportation system is convenient and cheap. The city has 28 city bus routes and buses running to railway stations and long-distance bus stations. The service hours of most buses are from 06:00 to 21:00. Most bus fares are 1 yuan. IC card deposit is 20 yuan, one way 0.8 yuan. At present, some buses in Zhangjiakou has offer the service of station reporting in English, which is convenient for the  foreign tourists.

In order to welcome the upcoming Winter Olympics and Paralympics, 100 hydrogen fuel cell buses was put into operation in 20119, including 30 Paralympic versions (with two wheelchair areas for disabled people inside the body), 30 ordinary versions and 40 express versions (with red exterior color). In addition, hydrogen fuel cell buses will also serve the 2022 Winter Olympics.

By Taxi

The starting price(within 2 km) for taxis in Zhangjiakou City is 6 yuan. For more than 2 kilometers, additional 1.2-1.6 yuan is charged for each kilometer depending on the displacement. Every five minutes wait for a unified one-time waiting fee, less than five minutes free. In 2019, 40 electric-change taxis were used for the passenger transfer service of Zhangjiakou high speed railway station.

Taxis in Zhangjiakou City, which is jointly bidding for the 2022 Winter Olympics with Beijing, have installed new taximeters and have added a bilingual greeting function in both Chinese and English. When taking a taxi, it's great to hear "Hello, welcome to take a taxi" and .  At present, more than 400 taxis in the city have replaced their new price counters. The taxi company also plans to teach drivers basic English daily expressions and etiquette knowledge, so as to reduce the obstacles in the communication between taxi drivers and foreign tourists.
