Best Time to Visit

Autumn and winter are best time to travel in Sanya. Sanya is a winter resort in China. Every year from October to March, the cold current from the north make temperature in the most area of China drop, but Sanya is still warm and pleasant. You can wear summer clothes, beach shoes taking a leisurely stroll on the sunny beach, soaking in the warm sea water, eating tropical fruit and enjoying the romance of Tianya and Haijiao. Every year in December, Sanya city holds the international wedding festival. The festival is usually held in Tianya Haijiao, a place with both commemorative significance and beautiful scenery, which is also the most unforgettable thing when traveling.

What to Pack

• The highest temperature occurs in summer, often breaking through 34℃ high temperature, suitable for wearing summer clothing. 
• Parasols, sunglasses, hats and other sunscreen products are essential, you are supposed to wear sunscreen frequently to avoid sunburn. 
• May to November is typhoon season, so get rain gear ready.
• Winter in Sanya is very warm with the temperature around 25℃. The weather is sunny and pleasant. You can wear summer clothes in the daylight, and you may feel kind of cold in the morning and evening, so you'd better bring long sleeve. For swimmers and divers, it is recommended to be in the ocean between 11:00 and 15:00 because the water is cooler in the morning and evening in winter.

Air Ticket and Accommodation

Prices of air tickets and hotels in Sanya are greatly affected by the seasonality. Prices in low season (April to September) and high season (October to march) often differ greatly. 

Take round-trip ticket between Beijing and Sanya for example, round-trip price of off-season is in 1500-2000 yuan or so, but the price of busy season is in 2500-3000 yuan or so. If you travel during the Spring Festival or the National Day holiday, the round-trip air tickets often exceed 4,000 yuan.

In terms of accommodation, the price of hotels in the peak season is usually twice as much as that in the off-season, and during the Spring Festival and the National Day holiday, the price could be even higher. If it is off season, you can book a hotel about half a month in advance, but in the peak season, it is best to reserve the hotel at least a month in advance. And during legal holidays, you are supposed to book the hotel as early as possible, because the cost-effective hotel may be likely to be fully reserved.

• Caution when swimming in the sea: The undercurrent and the back tide of the seabed in Sanya are fierce, especially when rising tide at night, the seawater flow rate speeds up and the risk factor increase sharply. Drownings happen frequently in the Dadonghai area, mostly because tourists do not listen to dissuasion and go to sea at night. • When you eat seafood, you can drink some liquor and rice vinegar in moderation, but you should not drink beer when you eat seafood, because drinking a lot of beer when you eat seafood will produce too much uric acid and cause gout. After eating seafood, do not eat cold drinks, watermelon and other food within an hour, and do not go swimming immediately. Seafood is rich in high protein, so for people who is easy to protein allergy, please do not eat too much, and coconut and seafood should not be eaten together.
• When buying seafood, remember to pierce the bottom of the bag to drain the water.

• Booking entrance tickets online in advance can be much cheaper than buying tickets on site. Most taxi and charter drivers also offer discounted tickets, so ask them if you can't buy it in advance.
• The price of a chartered car can be determined by the number of days visitors rent it. If the number of days is more, you can properly negotiate with the driver, get a certain discount.
• In Sanya, you can also use the mobile phone taxi software, the price will be cheaper than a taxi. You call at any time, convenient and quick.
• Tourists are advised to bring their own swimming laps. The rental of swimming rings at the beach store costs 30 or 40 yuan at a time. It is really not worth spending hundreds of yuan to rent swimming laps for going to the beach a few times.

Cash machines are quite common in Sanya downtown, but there are few ATM machines in Yalong bay and Dadonghai, so try to calculate the cash you need to spend and bring some more. The hotel and restaurants of Yalong bay and Dadonghai support paying by card. But if you're planning to feast on seafood at the first market and shop for tropical fruits and seafood at Honggang market, be sure to have cash on hand. But today, mobile payments (WeChat pay and Alipay pay) are available in most places of China, even if you just buy a bottle of water.
