Anshun Festivals and Events

Besides some Chinese traditional festivals, like New Year's Day(January 1), Spring Festival(The first day of the first lunar month; February 5, 2019), Lantern Festival(The fifteenth day of the first lunar month), Tomb Sweeping Day(15 days after the Spring equinox; April 5, 2019), Dragon Boat Festival(The fifth day of the fifth lunar month; June 7, 2019) and Mid-Autumn Day(The fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month; September 13, 2019), there are also some ethnic festivals and activities in Anshun. 

Festivals in Anshun

Tiaohua Festival(跳花节)

The Tiaohua(Jumping Flower) festival is a traditional festival of Miao ethnic group. It is held on the first lunar month every year. During the festival, the Miao people, especially young men and women, put on their festival costumes and gather from all directions to Tiaohua slope. Tiaohua festival has a long history, popular in Miao villages of Sichuan, Guizhou and Yunnan, but it is most representative and grandest in Anshun. Miao's Tiaohua festival in Anshun has been listed in the national intangible cultural heritage protection list. 

Si Yue Ba(四月八)

Si Yue Ba(the eighth day of the fourth lunar month) is the traditional festival of Han(Hakka), Miao, Buyi, Dong, Yao, Zhuang, Yi, Tujia and Gelao in Gansu, Guizhou, Guangxi, western Hunnan, North Guangxi and Guangdong. The content of festival varies from place to place and is mainly related to agriculture. On this day, people will hold various celebrations to express the joy of harvest and promote the cultural exchanges between ethnic groups. 

Liu Yue Liu(六月六)

Celebrated on the sixth day of the sixth lunar month, it is an important traditional festival for Buyi people to worship the kitchen god and the mountain god. Some people call it Little New Year, and it has been listed in the provincial intangible cultural heritage protection list. A series of celebration are held at that time, such as singing and dancing performance as well as playing Lusheng and flute, etc. 

First Harvest of the Year(吃新节)

First Harvest of the Year is a traditional festival for Gelao, Miao and Buyi, especially Gelao minority. It is held on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. First Harvest of the Year of Gelao People has been listed in the provincial intangible cultural heritage protection list for its rich cultural connotation. 

Activities in Anshun

Tai Ting Zi(抬亭子)

Tai Ting Zi, also called Tai Wanggong(抬汪公), welcome god, is a traditional folk activity that is held for the ceremony of Wang Gong's birthday in Tunpu village of Anshun. The folk activity has been listed in the provincial intangible cultural heritage protection list. 

You Bai Bing(游百病) at Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival is the national people's traditional festival. In anshun, in addition to eating Zongzi, wearing sachet, sweeping house, as well as hanging calamus and moxa stick, You Bai Bing is another representative folk activity. At the day of Dragon Boat Festival, people get out of home, parents will take their children to go outing, climbing mountain or go shopping, meaning to get rid of all diseases that may be contracted and let the diseases away from bodies. 

Worshiping Bamboo King of Yelang(夜郎竹王崇拜)

At the junction of Zhenning, Ziyun and Xixiu district, there is a mysterious Miao branch, with unique headwear and costumes. Until now, these Miao people still enshrine Yelang Bamboo King in their homes. For thousands of years, they worship the bamboo king and believe that Yelang bamboo king is their ancestor. The bamboo king has become the spiritual attachment of the minority group. 

Floating River Lanterns

July 15 of Chinese lunar calendar(August 15, 2019) is the traditional Ghost Festival, commonly known as "Mid-July Days" in Anshun. It is a festival of memorizing ancestors and deceased relatives. At this day, families get together to carry out various forms of memorial activities, floating river lantern is one of them. People put the alight river lantern on the river or lake, let it drift along the water, so as to mourn the ancestors, place on the memory of their loved ones, express the pray for happiness and peace, dispel the scourge of disease and hope children's happiness and well-being.
