Why is Chishui Danxia Landform So Special?

As a representative of Danxia landform in the early youth, it covers an area of more than 1200 square kilometers and is the largest Danxia landform in the country. It was voted at the 34th World Heritage Conference and became the 8th World Natural Heritage Project in China.

Where is Chishui Danxia Landform

Chishui Danxia landform is located in Chishui City, Guizhou Province. It is a representative of early Danxia landform and covers an area of more than 1200 square kilometers. Chishui Danxi is the largest and most spectacular Danxia landform in China.

Formation of Danxia Landform

Danxia landform is a special red rock landscape developed in southern China. In ancient times, thick red strata were deposited there. Due to weathering and water erosion, it was cut into red valleys, isolated mountains and steep rocks. This is the Danxia landform we see today.

Chishui Danxia Landfor is plateau canyon Danxia in humid subtropical zone. It had developed Danxia cliffs, square mountains, stone pillars, valleys, grooves and other typical Danxia individual forms. Because favorable natural conditions and few human activities, Chishui Danxia have developed and well preserved Cyathea National Nature Reserve, Zhuhai National Forest Park, Swallow Rock State Forest Park, Subtropical Evergreen Broadleaf Forest Nature Reserve. There are complete ecosystems with high rate coverage of forest and rich species. Chishui Danxia is mainly featured by high terrain, deep narrow valleys, red cliffs and flying waterfalls.

Main Attractions of Chishui Danxia Landform

It covers 116 square miles and has vast green forests, large and small waterfalls, numerous clear rivers and streams, sparkling lakes and various plants.

Fengxi River

Fengxi River, a tributary of Chishui River, suddenly encountered a huge rock in the city center, forming a spectacular sight. The water rushed at the red rock and flowed into a deep pool below. Waterfalls are considered to be one of the best waterfalls in China. It is 87 yards wide and 249 feet high, as beautiful as the famous Huangguoshu Waterfall. There is a water curtain hole 11 yards deep behind the waterfall. At the bottom of the waterfall, rare rocks of various shapes and sizes can be found. Water squeezed out of the cracks in the rock looks as fresh as jade. This indescribable beautiful scenery is called Shizhong Cave Scenic Area and is considered as a wonder in northern Guizhou.

Bingan Ancient Town

Seven miles from Chishui City lies an ancient town called Bingan, which reflects the original appearance of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). There is only one waterway leading the ancient city to the outside world. Since ancient times, it has been an important town on the track from southern Sichuan to Guizhou. The only narrow 437-yard flagstone street in the town is the commodity exchange market around several villages. Compared with the hustle and bustle of modern city life, the harmonious and peaceful atmosphere in this town is very precious.

Jurassic Park in China

Jurassic Park in China, located 25 miles from Chishui City, is the only Alsophila spinulosa national protected area in the world and its living environment. Covering an area of 15 square miles, it consists of three scenic spots: Gangou, Dashui and Liangcha River. Zhuhai National Forest Park is a fairyland composed of primitive forests, Zhuhai, waterfalls and red Danxia landform. Climbing the 85-foot-high “watch bamboo sea building”, you can see all the bamboos in a glance. The vast green dancing in the wind has the ability to renew and refresh your spirit.

Yan Yanzi National Forest Park

Yan Yanzi National Forest Park: Yan Yanzi National Forest Park is located about 25 kilometers (16 miles) from Chishui City. It is a primitive and closed scenic area composed of Yanziyan, Shishanping, Huangshui River and Hengshan Forest. It is an ideal place for sightseeing, scientific investigation and recreation.

Moon Lake Scenic Area

Moon Lake Science Area: Located at about 94 kilometers (58 miles) in Chishui City and over 900 meters (2,953 feet) above sea level, it is a hilly landscape of lakes, mainly composed of Moon Lake, Dashanping and Shuicha River. In the scenic spot, tourists can also find cultural and natural landscapes such as inscriptions on cliffs, primitive forests, waterfalls, Danxia landform and Long March ruins.

Other local attractions include Sidonggou and Jiuqu Lake. Chishui has so many beautiful scenery, it provides an opportunity to enjoy the natural scenery of China.

Characteristics

Different from other Danxia landforms in China, Chishui Danxia belongs to the young early Danxia and is also the most beautiful stage. There is not only Danxia landform here, but also a combination of waterfalls, wetlands, forests and other natural beauty. The forest coverage rate has reached more than 90%. It is also called “Green Danxia”.
A large area of ancient vegetation and various rare and endangered animals and plants have become the most unique feature of Chishui Danxia.

Chishui Danxia landform, its bright red Danxia cliff, majestic solitary peak, thousands of spectacular rocks and mountains, huge rock promenades, Danxia caves and canyons and beautiful green forests constitute an incomparable magic tourist area.

1. Chishui Danxia landform is the only high, deep and secluded Danxia landform in China.
2. Danxia in China has only one place with hundreds of waterfalls: more than 350 waterfalls fly to deep canyons. Almost every waterfall has waterfalls of different forms and sizes.
It is the only pure sandstone Danxia landform in China.
4. It is the only early youth Danxia landscape in Danxia, China, which marks the early development of Danxia landform.

Best Time to Travel Chishui Danxia Landform

The best time to pay a visit is in Spring and Autumn.

Subtropical mountain monsoon climate prevails in Chishui City, with an annual average temperature of 18.1℃, and annual sunshine hours of 1297.7 hours. The average temperature in July is as high as about 28℃, the average temperature in January is as low as about 7.9℃, and the temperature annual range is 20.1 ~ 20.5℃. Therefore, it is suitable to visit in spring and autumn.

How to Get There

  •  Take tourism speical lines from Chishui Old Passenger Transport Station (located on the West Renmin Road in the downtown area) to the scenic spot.
  • Hire a cab to visit the scenic spot. It costs around CNY 200 per day.
