Description
The village complex features well-preserved ancient military defenses such as stone gates, watchtowers, and walls. Nestled in the picturesque Yunjiao Mountain Gorge, Yunshan Tun is surrounded by steep mountains and ancient trees, with access limited to a winding stone staircase leading to its fortified gate.
Stone walls connect cliffs and resemble the Great Wall, encircling the village. A central east-west stone street runs through, lined with a traditional opera stage, the Caishen Temple, ancestral halls, and the famous “Deshengchang” traditional medicine shop. Winding alleys link homes, showcasing a sophisticated defensive design with a terraced layout.
Yunfeng Eight Villages played a crucial role in the Ming military strategy, allowing for organized defense and mutual support among the villages. Each village features protective walls and watchtowers, blending military and residential architecture. Yunshan Tun and Ben Zhai have been designated as national key cultural heritage sites and recognized as a “Chinese Historical and Cultural Village.”
