Xinchang Great Buddha Temple is located in the valley between Nanming Mountain and Shicheng Mountain in Southwest Xinchang County, Shaoxing City, Zhejiang Province.Originally it was built during the Yonghe Period in the East Jin Dynasty and has a long history of more than 1600 years.

History of Xinchang Great Buddha Temple

According to records in Biographies of Eminent Monks, in 345 A.D, an eminent monk Tan Guang came to Shicheng Mountain to travel here. He lived in a stone chamber and hastily established Yinyue Temple, which was the origin of Xinchang Great Buddha. 

Main Attractions of Xinchang Great Buddha Temple

Xinchang Great Buddha Temple itself is constructed with five levels, the temple complex includes the Heavenly King Hall, the Western Hall, the Main Shrine Hall, the Dafo (Big Buddha) Hall, the Dizang Hall, and the Scripture Hall. The Big Buddha Statue itself is located in a grotto, and is carved of a massive slab of granite.

The Big Buddha is almost 15 meters in height, its nose alone is 1.5 meters and ears are 2.7 meters in size. It is believed that the statue is about 1,600 years old from the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420) and is from the time that Indians began teaching Buddhism to China.
