Sangdui Red Grassland in Daocheng County, Garze

Overview

The Red Grassland (红草地) in Sangdui Town (桑堆镇), Daocheng County (稻城县), Garze (甘孜州), Sichuan Province (四川省) is renowned for its vibrant red hue during autumn, creating a striking contrast with the surrounding landscape. The red color of the grass results from the accumulation of sugars in the leaves due to autumn’s climatic conditions, marking the aging of the plants.

The best time to appreciate the Red Grassland is typically in mid-October when its colors are most vivid. To protect this natural wonder, it has been enclosed, and an entry fee of 10 yuan is charged. Visitors can take photos, but it’s important to be aware that after the optimal viewing period, the red grass may begin to wither. The environment surrounding the grassland is also noteworthy, particularly the poplar trees (青杨树) near the Banghe Bridge (傍河大桥), which provide excellent backdrops for photography. When photographing in this plateau area, it’s essential to pay attention to lighting and terrain to plan your shots effectively.

Description

Taking photos of the Red Grassland is undoubtedly a wonderful way to preserve memories; however, a more profound experience can be found by engaging with the landscape itself. Instead of just capturing images, visitors should take a moment to crouch beside the grass, observing its beauty up close. The red grass is reminiscent of “wolf poison” (狼毒) found in Zhongdian, Yunnan, with the primary difference being that the red grass plants are smaller and more delicate.

The striking red color is not like the tender pink of budding flowers or the fiery red of fully bloomed blossoms; it symbolizes a deeper richness, akin to a wise elder who has weathered life’s storms, absorbing sunlight and reflecting on life’s journey. This vibrant landscape reminds us that life is multifaceted, and only through diverse experiences—sweet and bitter alike—can one truly appreciate its beauty. The gentle autumn breeze rustles the leaves of the poplar trees, creating a serene atmosphere where the bright red grass resembles a fiery sunset resting peacefully in a small village.

Scientific Insights

The transformation of plant color from green to red occurs due to autumn’s climatic conditions, promoting the accumulation of sugars that eventually convert into red pigments. This change signifies the aging process of the plants. Much like the flora, humans experience life’s colorful spectrum, and reflecting on our own journey can evoke similar feelings. If you were the vibrant Red Grassland, what emotions would arise? Would you reminisce about youthful passions, triumphs against adversity, or the somber moments that remind you of life’s impermanence?

The Red Grassland is now enclosed by a small wall, with an entry fee of 10 yuan. Mid-October is the peak viewing time; with some luck, visitors may catch the grass in several shades!

Travel Experience

The sight of the Red Grassland, under a backdrop of blue skies and sunlight, is truly delightful. However, a few days’ absence can lead to noticeable wilting of the grass, signaling the end of the best viewing period. Local Tibetan children often play nearby, while visitors can explore the sunlit side of the grassland, where the vibrant colors are most pronounced. The stones on the grassland become well-defined under the light, and reflections of the blue sky and white clouds can be seen in nearby ponds.

As the sun approaches the western horizon, we arrived at the Banghe Bridge. Here, in the expansive valley, the sun still shines brightly. When photographing on the plateau, awareness of the surroundings and terrain is crucial to capture the best angles.

Scenic Photography

The riverbank west of the bridge is adorned with poplar trees. Carefully descending a ladder to the river valley, visitors should be cautious of a Tibetan mastiff (藏獒) tied nearby—it’s best to avoid provoking it. The riverbed is mostly dry after the rainy season, and visitors may spot a traveler in red clothing walking along the opposite bank, a striking contrast against the yellow leaves of the trees. As the sun casts its final rays on the poplar trees and white pagoda near the bridge, we captured our last moments in Daocheng.

Walking along the north street of the county, the eastern mountains and sky are painted with the vibrant hues of the sunset.
