Covering 56,000 hectares at altitudes from 2,900 to 6,032 meters, Yading Nature Reserve is renowned as one of China’s best-preserved natural scenic spots, often referred to as "the last pure land on earth" and "the last Shangri-La."

What to See in Yading Nature Reserve

The Three Mountains of God

The reserve's highlights include the three sacred snow-capped mountains:

  • Mount Jambeyang (5,958 meters): Represents compassion.
  • Mount Chanadorje (5,958 meters): Symbolizes wisdom.
  • Mount Shenrezig (6,032 meters): Embodies power.

These mountains are revered in Tibetan culture, and pilgrims often trek to them in hopes of fulfilling their wishes.

Gongga Chonggu Monastery

An essential stop, Chonggu Monastery was established 800 years ago during the Yuan Dynasty. Visitors can witness Lamas in meditation and explore this historic site.

Luorong Pasture

Surrounded by the Three Mountains of God, Luorong Pasture is ideal for viewing the majestic peaks and enjoying the serene environment, complete with Tibetan-style houses. Horse riding is available to Milk Lake from here.

Milk Lake and Five Color Lake

  • Milk Lake: Named for its white-tinted waters, it is a glacial lake surrounded by stunning landscapes.
  • Five Color Lake: The highest lake in Yading, it holds spiritual significance in Buddhism, attracting pilgrims for worship.

Both lakes are just 0.3 km apart and offer breathtaking views.

Pearl Lake

Also known as Zhuomalacuo, this picturesque green lake is perfect for photography, with reflections of surrounding mountains.

Yading Tibetan Village

Known as the Land of Sun, this village provides a glimpse into Tibetan life and is a popular base for travelers.

Getting Around Yading Nature Reserve

Cars are not allowed inside the reserve; shuttle buses are the primary mode of transport. After reaching Zaguanbeng, it's a 30-minute walk to Chonggu Monastery, where you can take an electric car or hike.

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1: Visit Mount Jambeyang, Mount Chanadorje, Luorong Pasture, Milk Lake, and Five Color Lake (horse riding available).

Day 2: Explore Pearl Lake and Chenrezig Mountain.

Travel Tips

  1. Sun Protection: Bring sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen.
  2. Clothing: Layered warm clothing and comfortable hiking shoes are essential.
  3. Waterproof Gear: Be prepared for quick weather changes.
  4. Hydration: Drink plenty of water to help with altitude adaptation.
  5. Snacks: Bring food and water, as shops are unavailable in the reserve.

Traveling to and from Yading

Daocheng Yading Airport, opened in 2013, offers direct flights to major cities. It is a 2.5-hour drive from the airport to Yading Nature Reserve.
