Buses cover most of the urban areas and have low fares. Taxis offer more flexible point-to-point service and are relatively expensive.

Airport Express

After landing in Hong Kong, the best choice for tourists to transfer to the city would be the MTR’s high-speed Airport Express train which is the fastest transport link to the airport and takes approximately 24 minutes to reach Hong Kong Island.  The trains depart every 12 minutes and at 130 km/hr will whisk you from the Airport Terminals to Central in 24 minutes. The Airport Express line brings you from the airport into several stations in the major areas of Hong Kong, including Central and Kowloon where most visitors will be staying, and makes it very easy to reach your destination wherever it might be in the city. Further more, Airport Express passengers can catch a free shuttle bus from Kowloon and Hong Kong stations to major hotels. Airport Bus

Getting to and from the Airport on the City’s double-decker buses is the most economical option, and the “A” routes are the most comfortable among all airport bus routes. There are four airbus lines with Route A and E as the two main types of buses:

  • Route A: the CityFlyer AirBus which offers the A routes from the airport to the urban area, covering major stations in the city, such as Mong Kok, Tsim Sha Tsui, Causeway Bay, etc. Most of them are luxury express trains with free wifi, which is more expensive, at around HK$ 40 (32 yuan).
  • Route E: it takes longer than route A to detour around Tung Chung and then enter the city. With ordinary air-conditioned buses, the price is about half that of route A, which is about 20 Hong Kong dollars (about RMB 16 yuan).
  • Route S: a circular route between the airport and Tung Chung. The price is cheaper than other routes, around 3 Hong Kong dollars (about RMB 2.5 yuan).
  • Route N: overnight shift, covering major areas such as Mong Kok and Causeway Bay. It is the only public transportation between the city and the airport at night, with prices ranging from HK$ 20 to HK$ 40 (about 16-32 yuan).

The A routes are more direct and take you to all the main areas in Kowloon and Hong Kong. Buses depart every 20 minutes for most of the day. There are 12 convenient Airbus ‘A’ routes that can take you from the airport to key locations on Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and in the New Territories (including Lantau Island) with fewer stops than an ordinary city bus. Cityflyer route A21 serves the tourist areas of Kowloon. The External CityBus has limited luggage space and the routes take longer than the more direct A routes. They service the Airport Area and Tung Chung New Town, consequently with a longer route but convenient mostly for the airport staff that commutes every day.

The journey distance between the airport and Hung Hom Station is about 40 km. The approximate journey time is 75 mins and varies according to the traffic conditions. When you exit the Arrivals Hall, turn right to find Airbuses and city buses. You can pay using your Octopus Card, otherwise exact change will be needed.

Taxi

Taxis are readily available from the taxi pick-up area in front of the airport’s Arrivals Hall, and they offer a door to door service to and from Hong Kong International Airport.  If there are 3-4 people in your group, consider a taxi as an alternative to the Airport Express or the Airport Shuttle buses. As you come out the Arrivals Hall, head to the official Taxi stands right outside. Hong Kong taxis are colour-coded according to their operating areas, choose the right one for your destination. Separate rows are designated for different taxi types:

  • Urban taxis (red) : operate in most areas in Hong Kong (except partial of Tung Chung Road and roads in south Lantau).
  • New Territories taxis (green) : mainly operate in the north-eastern part (i.e. north of Sha Tin) and north-western part (i.e. north of Tsuen Wan) of the New Territories.
  • Lantau taxis (blue) : operate only on Lantau Island and Chek Lap Kok.
  • All taxis are allowed to provide services at the passenger terminals of Hong Kong International Airport
