Yulong Hui Ethnic Town in Xichang City, Liangshan

Yulong Hui Ethnic Township凉山州西昌市裕隆回族乡 is located in Xichang City (西昌市), Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture (凉山彝族自治州), Sichuan Province (四川省). Situated in the central-southern part of Xichang City along the middle reaches of the Anning River (安宁河), it is bordered by Madao Town (马道镇) and Jingjiu Township (经久乡) to the east across the river, Gaochao Township (高草乡) to the south, Kaiyuan Township (开元乡) to the west, and Taihe Town (太和镇) to the north. The township covers an area of 44.09 square kilometers. As of the end of 2019, the registered population was 18,524.

Historical Background

  • 1958: Yulong Township was merged with Jiulong Township (九龙乡) to form Jiuyu Commune (九裕公社).
  • 1961: Yulong Commune was re-established.
  • 1984: The commune was converted into a township.
  • 1985: Xingxiu Hui Ethnic Township (星宿回族乡) was established.
  • 1987: Yulong Township was incorporated into Xingxiu Hui Ethnic Township.
  • 1989: The township was renamed Yulong Hui Ethnic Township.

Administrative Division

  • End of 2011: Yulong Hui Ethnic Township was divided into 9 village committees: Yulong (裕隆), Xingfu (兴富), Xingxiu (星宿), Changcun (长村), Liubao (六堡), Sanhe (三合), Anquan (安全), Fuxing (复兴), and Yongxing (永兴), with a total of 73 villager groups.
  • June 2020: The township included 5 administrative villages: Yulong Village, Xingfu Village, Xingxiu Village, Xinghua Village (兴华村), and Xing’an Village (兴安村). The township government is located in Liubao Village (六堡村).

Location

Yulong Hui Ethnic Township is situated in the central-southern part of Xichang City along the middle reaches of the Anning River. It is bordered by Madao Town and Jingjiu Township to the east, Gaochao Township to the south, Kaiyuan Township to the west, and Taihe Town to the north. The area covers 44.09 square kilometers.

Terrain and Topography

The terrain in Yulong Hui Ethnic Township slopes from low in the east to high in the west. The highest point is Luanshitan (乱世滩) in Xingfu Village, while the lowest point is in Sanhe Village.

Climate

The township has a subtropical monsoon climate with rainy summers, dry winters, and distinct seasons. The average annual temperature is 17°C, with a frost-free period of about 275 days. Average annual sunshine is 2,435.5 hours, and average annual precipitation is 1,008 millimeters, with most rain falling from June to August.

Hydrology

The Anning River flows along the boundary of Yulong Township from north to south, covering a length of 5 kilometers within the area. The Jiulongyan (九龙堰) and Hexi (河西渠) irrigation systems, along with the Changcun Village reservoir’s water systems, form the regional irrigation network and rainwater drainage system.

  • End of 2011: The total population was 17,048, with 731 urban residents, giving an urbanization rate of 4.3%. There were also 965 floating residents. The population distribution was as follows: 8,673 males (50.9%) and 8,375 females (49.1%); 2,519 people under 14 years (14.8%); 12,556 people aged 15-64 (73.7%); and 1,973 people aged 65 and over (11.6%). Ethnic composition included primarily Han (12,116 people, 71.1%) and Hui (4,197 people, 24.6%), with other ethnic minorities including Yi, Tibetan, Mongolian, Dong, and Korean, totaling 735 people.
  • 2017: The resident population was 19,375.
  • End of 2019: The registered population was 18,524.
