Yuanduhu Lake in Weifang
Overview
Yuanduhu Lake is the second functional area of the Bailang River (白浪河) improvement project, known as the Water Landscape Park Area. The construction of this area adopts a landscaping model reminiscent of Hangzhou’s West Lake, featuring grand vistas and wide water surfaces that create a strong visual impact. The beautifully curved and elegant shorelines enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of the lake.
Origin of “Yuandudu”
The term “yuandu” refers to kites, which were historically known as “yāo” in ancient times and “yuān” in the north. Most people believe that kites originated in China and later spread around the world as traditional folk crafts. The earliest kites in China were made from wood. During the Spring and Autumn period, the philosopher Mozi (墨子) from the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (circa 478-392 BC) spent three years creating a wooden kite that could soar into the sky. He made this kite in Lushan (modern-day Weifang, Shandong), and it reportedly flew for just one day before breaking. This wooden kite is considered the earliest kite in China and possibly the world, dating back approximately 2,400 years. It wasn’t until the Eastern Han period, after Cai Lun invented paper-making, that kites made of paper began to appear, referred to as “paper kites.”
World Kite Capital
Weifang (潍坊) is renowned as the “World Kite Capital.” On April 1, 1984, the Weifang Municipal Government hosted the first Weifang International Kite Festival, inspired by a suggestion from American friend David Checkley. This annual festival has continued, and by 2006, Weifang had hosted 23 editions. In April 1987, the city was officially designated as the “World Kite Capital” by the organizing committee of the fifth International Kite Festival. Additionally, the International Kite Federation decided to establish its headquarters in Weifang.
Scenic Features
According to plans, the west bank of Yuanduhu Lake will see the relocation of Youth Road (青年路) further west. The area to the west of this road will be excavated to build embankments, allowing water to form a lake. The former Youth Road will be transformed into a scenic commercial promenade similar to the Yang Gong Dike at West Lake, promoting the development of the western shore of Yuanduhu Lake. Attractions along the lake, including Xingyue Plaza (星月广场), Guanhuxuan Pavilion (观湖轩), Sailing Dock (风帆码头), private clubs, and landscaping, are already taking shape, alongside facilities for tennis, basketball, natural swimming, and water sports. The eastern shore will feature urban forest-style landscaping to create an ecological backdrop. A waterfront commercial street will be developed on the eastern side, aiming to embody grandeur, commercial vibrancy, and attract visitors.
