Overview of the Scenic Area

Wangxiangu Valley Scenic Area (望仙谷景区) is located in the northern part of Wangxian Township (望仙乡), Guangxin District (广信区), Shangrao City (上饶市), Jiangxi Province (江西省). The area is approximately 50 kilometers from the city center and is surrounded by stunning natural beauty. To the south, it borders the Ling Mountain Main Peak Scenic Area (灵山主峰景区), to the north it faces the Three Clears Mountain (三清山), to the northwest lies the Ge Luling (葛路岭), and to the west, the Fang Village (方村) is located. To the southeast, you can reach Nanshan Village (南山村). The total area of Wangxiangu Valley covers 6.1 square kilometers and includes five main sections: the Nine Ox Gorge Experience Area (九牛溪峡谷体验区), Yao Pu Old Street (岩铺老街), Dome Peak Cultural Area (圆顶峰文化区), Nanshan Health and Resort Area (南山养生度假区).

Major Attractions in Wangxiangu Valley

Three-tier Waterfall (三叠水)

The Three-tier Waterfall originates from the Xikeng Stream (西坑溪) on Gaonan Peak (高南峰) and Fang Village Stream (方村溪) from Xigao Peak (西高峰). The water flows down through high and low steps, creating cascading water features with varying sounds and appearances, forming a welcoming “three-tiered water” scene.

Three Pots (三口锅)

Under the force of the waterfall, the turbulent waters have eroded and polished the rocks, creating a curious three-pot phenomenon. The clear waters are deep and unfathomable, with a local legend saying, “The flower thread never reaches the bottom.”

Glass Plank Road (玻璃栈道)

This high-altitude glass plank road, built along a cliff, spans 388 meters in length and 1.5 meters in width. The glass path itself is 50 meters long and 1 meter wide, made entirely of 12×12 laminated anti-explosion glass, with a total thickness of 28 millimeters. The path stands nearly 100 meters above the ground.

Workshop Street (作坊街)

Located between Hu Clan Ancestral Hall (胡氏宗祠) and Yang Mansion Dining House (杨家食府), Workshop Street is a scenic commercial street featuring traditional agricultural handicrafts. It showcases workshops for producing products such as red sugar, wine brewing, sauces, oils, rice cakes, tofu, white tea, chili sauce, paper making, wood and bamboo crafts, and fabric dyeing.

Mingchan Alley (鸣蝉巷)

At the end of Ruogu Street (若谷街), Mingchan Alley gathers numerous handicraft shops, including Ouyang Painting Studio (欧阳画社), Bamboo Weaving Shop (篾匠铺), Woodcraft Workshop (木艺工坊), and Lantern Shop (灯笼铺), offering visitors the chance to paint, learn woodworking, and engage with local artisans.

Lingguang Street (灵光街)

Lingguang Street is an example of northeastern Jiangxi residential architecture. It features shops selling old tea, cassava powder, lanterns, old-style barber shops, children’s bookstores, and cultural and creative items, providing visitors with a taste of local cultural traditions.

Yang Mansion (杨府)

Yang Mansion is a Ming and Qing Dynasty residence built to commemorate Yang Shiqiao (杨时乔, 1531–1609), a notable official from Shangrao during the Ming Dynasty. The mansion consists of three courtyards, two sky wells, and a grand archway with four pillars and three rooms. The architecture features brick carvings, wooden carvings, and stone carvings, depicting various figures, stories, flowers, and animals.

Hu Clan Ancestral Hall (胡氏宗祠)

This ancestral hall is entirely made of wood, following the traditional style of six pillars and five rooms, with two courtyards. The main hall’s beams are carved with peach celebrations symbolizing peace and prosperity, and the front flower patterns are of five lions, symbolizing protection. The hall also houses the memorial tablets of ancestors.

Cliffside Homestay (悬崖民宿)

Baihe Cliff (白鹤崖) stands at an elevation of over 110 meters, featuring glass rooms suspended on the cliff, a cliffside library, a restaurant, and a high-altitude observation platform. These structures follow the natural contours of the mountain, offering breathtaking views of the valley and surrounding scenery.

San Shen Temple (三神庙)

The San Shen Temple is one of the few temples named after the “Three Gods” in Jiangxi or even the entire country. It is dedicated to the God of Wealth, the Earth God, and the Dragon King. The temple is built to represent Taoist principles of creation and balance.

Tianxin Zen Temple (天心禅寺)

Located at the top of Yuanshan Peak (圆山峰), Tianxin Zen Temple (天心禅寺) was originally built during the Ming Dynasty (1584). It was later expanded during the Qing Dynasty and became a thriving center for Buddhist study. The temple was destroyed during wartime in 1930 but was rebuilt in 1986.

Cultural Activities

Wangxiangu Valley offers a variety of cultural activities, such as bamboo weaving, woodcraft, and traditional Chinese performances. Visitors can enjoy a range of events like the traditional Han Chinese wedding performance, the “Nine-story Tower” (翻九楼), Gannan Opera (赣剧), and the Bench Dragon (板凳龙). There are also performances of storytelling (评书) and Beijing Opera (京韵大鼓), as well as immersive theater experiences like I Am the Medicine God (我就是药神).

Han Chinese Traditional Wedding Show

The traditional wedding show in Wangxiangu Valley recreates the grand scenes of ancient Chinese weddings, complete with the phoenix coronet and bridal makeup. Visitors can participate in ancient wedding rituals and experience traditional culture.

Immersive Experience Play: I Am the Medicine God

An immersive theater play, I Am the Medicine God (我就是药神), was created by a multimedia team that previously worked on the Palace Museum. Set in the Lingguang Medicine Shop, it tells the story of Hu Lingguang, a medicine god, who, with the help of his son, manages to cure the magistrate’s daughter in an amusing and magical adventure. The play immerses visitors in the lively, chaotic daily life of the Hu family.
