Location and Administrative Division

Saiyuan Hui Ethnic Township (赛涧回族乡, Saiyuan Huizu Xiang) is located in the southeastern part of Ying Shang County (颍上县), Fuyang City (阜阳市), Anhui Province (安徽省), China. It is situated east of the Huai River (淮河), across from Shou County’s Zhengyangguan Town (寿县正阳关镇). To the south, it borders the Huai River, to the west it adjoins Wanggang Town (王岗镇), and to the north, it is adjacent to Yanghu Town (杨湖镇). The township covers an area of 48.52 square kilometers.

As of the end of 2019, Saiyuan Hui Ethnic Township had a registered population of 26,361.

Historical Background

  • Early Ming Dynasty: Part of Zhengyangguan.
  • Qing Dynasty (1736-1795): Was under the jurisdiction of Dong Liu District (东六都所).
  • Early 1949: Incorporated into Ying Shang and established as Saiyuan Township.
  • April 1961: Became Saiyuan Commune.
  • January 1973: Established Saiyuan Management Area.
  • August 1979: Restored as Saiyuan Commune.
  • September 1983: Renamed Saiyuan Township.
  • March 1992: Merged into Wanggang Town.
  • November 1996: Separated from Wanggang Town and reestablished as Saiyuan Township.
  • May 1998: Renamed Saiyuan Hui Ethnic Township.

As of June 2020, Saiyuan Hui Ethnic Township administers six administrative villages.

2011 Structure

By the end of 2011, Saiyuan Hui Ethnic Township included six village committees: Bali Duo (八里垛), Zhou Tai (周台), Li Tai (李台), Saiyuan (赛涧), Zhang Lou (张楼), and Jiang Tai (江台), with a total of 68 village groups.

2020 Structure

As of June 2020, the township continued to consist of six administrative villages. The township government is located at 91 Saiyuan Street, Saiyuan Village (赛涧村赛涧街91号).

Geographic Environment

Location and Terrain

Saiyuan Hui Ethnic Township is positioned in the southeastern part of Ying Shang County, east of the Huai River, south of the Huai River, west of Wanggang Town, and north of Yanghu Town. The total area is 48.52 square kilometers.

Topography

The township is located along the Huai River and has relatively low-lying terrain. The highest point is in Saiyuan Village, while the lowest point is at Li Tai Village’s Liuzi Kou.

Hydrology

The largest river in Saiyuan Hui Ethnic Township is the Yanggang River (沿岗河), which flows from Jiang Tai Village through Zhang Lou Village, Saiyuan Village, and Li Tai Village. It is 3.2 kilometers long, with a drainage area of 15.3 square kilometers. Major tributaries include Xindu Kou Tributary and Mengwa River Tributary.

Natural Disasters

Saiyuan Hui Ethnic Township is prone to natural disasters such as droughts, floods, and strong winds. Flooding occurs approximately every three years, with the most severe flood recorded in August 1975, affecting all six administrative villages and damaging 23,000 acres of crops, leading to a reduction in yield by 10.5 million kilograms.
