Mengla Mohan Border Port in Yunnan

Mohan Port is a first-class national port between China and Laos, located in Mengla County, Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China. Since the operation of the international passenger trains of the China-Laos Railway on April 13, 2023, until December 5 of the same year, Mohan Port has inspected a total of 474 international passenger trains, and the number of inbound and outbound passengers from 75 countries and regions across six continents has exceeded 100,000, reaching 100,186. The main reasons for entry and exit are mainly for sightseeing, visiting friends and relatives, and employment and business, accounting for 39.7% of the total number of people. The number of foreign passengers entering and exiting is approximately 14,900, accounting for 14.9% of the total number of people. Passengers from Laos, Thailand, and Singapore rank among the top.

Historical Evolution: In May 2022, Kunming entrusted Mengla Town to jointly build an international port city. On December 2, 2022, on the occasion of the first anniversary of the opening and operation of the China-Laos Railway, the comprehensive designated supervision site of Mohan Railway Port on the China-Laos Railway will be officially completed and put into use. As of December 5, 2023, Mohan Port has inspected a total of 474 international passenger trains, and the number of inbound and outbound passengers from 75 countries and regions across six continents has exceeded 100,000, reaching 100,186.

Geographical Location: Mohan is the southernmost land border town in China, belonging to Mengla County, Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China (under the administration of Kunming since May 2022). Mohan is the endpoint of China National Highway 213 (Lanmo Line), connecting with Route 13 in Laos. The ASEAN Highway traverses the town from north to south, with a length of about 300 meters.

Advantages of Location: The geographical advantage of Mohan Port is evident. The special location itself and the enormous potential of the Kunming-Bangkok International Channel have not been greatly affected by the international financial crisis: statistics show that except for a slight decrease in the total number of inbound and outbound personnel and vehicles, the cumulative completion of imports and exports of goods at Mohan Port reached 157,650 tons, a year-on-year increase of 14.8%, and the cumulative completion of foreign trade volume reached US$50.094 million, a year-on-year increase of 34.7%.

Export Foreign Trade: Looking at the numbers alone, the importance of Mohan Port in foreign trade seems small. However, in terms of the number of landing visa holders at border trade ports in Yunnan Province, Mohan ranks first in the country and number of third-country nationals entering and exiting. In 2008, the number of inbound and outbound personnel at Mohan Port reached 738,800, of which 41,312 were third-country nationals from more than 100 countries. After the completion of the Kunming-Mohan Highway, the number of third-country nationals entering and exiting Mohan Port doubled, reaching 16,381 in the first three months of 2009, an increase of 91.4% year-on-year. Among them, many come from Thailand, and more than 9,000 people have traveled from Qingkong through Laos to Xishuangbanna and Kunming in China for business and tourism.
