Overview
Golog Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (果洛藏族自治州, Guǒluò Zàngzú Zìzhìzhōu) is located in the southeastern corner of Qinghai Province, China. The region is an autonomous prefecture with a rich Tibetan cultural heritage. The area spans 76,312 km² (29,464 sq mi) and its administrative seat is in Maqên County (玛沁县). Golog is an area of both natural beauty and cultural significance, offering travelers a unique blend of Tibetan traditions and stunning landscapes.
In Tibetan, Golog is called མགོ་ལོག་བོད་རིགས་རང་སྐྱོང་ཁུལ (Mgo-log Bod-rigs rang-skyong-khul), and it is historically significant for its connection to the Tibetan plateau and the Yellow River.
Geography and Natural Features
The Amne Machin Mountain Range
The geography of Golog is primarily shaped by the Amne Machin mountain range (阿尼玛卿山), which runs in a northwest-to-southeast direction across the entire prefecture. This range is the highest point in the region, with its peak rising to an elevation of 6,282 meters (20,611 feet). The Amne Machin Range plays a crucial role in shaping the local climate and the course of the Yellow River.
The Yellow River and Its Sources
Golog lies in the upper basin of the Yellow River (黄河), China’s second-longest river. The region is home to Gyaring Lake (嘉陵湖) and Ngoring Lake (诺日朗湖), which are considered to be the sources of the Yellow River. These lakes lie on the western edge of the prefecture, though they also receive water from rivers that flow from even farther west in Qumarleb County (曲麻莱县) of the Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (玉树藏族自治州).
The Yellow River’s Great Bend
The course of the Yellow River through Golog is particularly notable. The river initially flows southeast through Golog for several hundred kilometers, skirting the southern side of the Amne Machin range. This part of the river forms a significant bend, where it changes course dramatically, turning almost 180 degrees and flowing northwest for an additional 200–300 km (120–190 miles). This winding section of the Yellow River forms the northeastern boundary of the prefecture, creating unique geographic features and ecosystems in the region.
