Urumqi Festivals and Events

Corban Festival

Time: December 10th of the Islamic calendar
Activities: In the early morning of the festival, Muslims bathe and then wear neat and formal clothes to go to the mosque to attend their ceremonies. Whether in the cities or the countryside squire, grand Maxrap dancing shows are held. Colorful and wonderful decoration is made during the event. And there are all kinds of snacks as well. Except the Muslims, other nationalities like Kazak, Kirgiz, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan all have their own activities to celebrate, such as horse racing, wrestling, and other game activities.

Lesser Bairam

Time: Late September of the Islamic calendar
Activities: Muslims have their customs during this time, and when they finish the fast for the special time, there would be gatherings with people around. The activity remains about one month.

Nowruz Festival

Time: March 20 – 22nd each year
Activities: The festival is held by people who live in nomadic life. The period of March sees the season of melting ice and snow, plants turning green, reviving of life and the time of birth to young animals, so it’s good time for herdsmen. They would celebrate it and prepare for the new beginning of herding.

Winterlude

Time: Late December of each year
The first winterlude was held in Urumqi in 2002. Later, main meeting-place of the festival is set in Urumqi and branch meeting places are set around. A series of ice and snow viewing and entertainment are carried out, such as the ice and snow tour of thousands of people, snow driving tour, ice sculpture exhibition, hot spring winter swimming, etc.
