Shigatse Festivals and Events
Tibetan Festivals are traditionally based on lunar calendar. Most of the Tibetan festivals on the Tibetan plateaus are deeply influenced by Buddhism or rich ancestral culture. During the festivals, all the people wear traditional costume and perform different traditional dances and ritual activities. Festival is the best way to experience the diverse culture and tradition of the local and their ethnic affinity.
Festivals in Shigatse
1. Tibetan New Year
Tibetan New Year is the Tibetan people's traditional festival, and the most solemn festival. Shigatse not only celebrates the Farmers' Year on December 1 in Tibetan Calendar, but also the Tibetan New Year on January 1 in Tibetan calendar.
2. Lingka Festival林卡节
Lingka is Tibetan language, meaning park. Strolling Lingka(or strolling in the park) is a ethnic habit formed by Tibetan people according to plateau climate, environment and living conditions. In the past, half a month from May 1 to 15 of the Tibetan calendar, people often came out of the courtyard to stroll around the shady Lingka and gradually became the Lingka Festival.
3. Gyantse Damar Festival江孜达玛节
The annual Gyantse Damar Festival lasts from April 15 of Tibetan calendar. Considered to be one of Tibet's most traditional festivals, it offers us a chance to experience Tibetan Buddhism and folklore in an intimate way. Locals from the 19 townships in the Gyangze County gather to celebrate the festival, which also attracts people from everywhere. Tourists can enjoy wresting, horse racing, shooting contest, etc. It is not only a folk festival but an exchange with a theme of promoting economy through cultural events like exchanging goods in the trade fair etc.

4. Tashilhunpo Festival
The Buddha Exhibition in Tashilhunpo Monastery has a history of more than 500 years and is different from Buddha exhibitions in other monasteries. The Buddha Exhibitions in Tashilhunpo and Drepung are most famous and solemn ceremonies in Tibet. The Buddha Exhibition Festival of Tashilhunpo Monastery lasts from May 14 to May 16 in Tibetan Calendar. Thousands of Buddhism followers would come here to show their respects to the Buddha and tourists can watch the grand Buddha Thangka unfolding which lasts for two days and many pilgrims would do the religious circling around the gigantic Buddha and Tashilunpo monastery.

2. Visit Tashilhunpo Monastery
Founded by the First Dalai Lama in 1447, Tashilhunpo Monastery is one of the six big monasteries in Tibet. It is the seat of the Panchen Lama, the second ranking person in the Gelugpa Tibetan Buddhist hierarchy, after the Dalai Lama. The monastery houses the tombs of Panchen Lamas and a 22.4-meter statue of Maitreya Buddha. Tashilhunpo remains popular among the Tibetans, as they carry on coming here on pilgrimage.
