Language
Rizhao dialect is an ancient local dialect which belonged to the ancient Dongyi culture developed more than 8,300 years ago. Although it is a part of Shandong dialect, Rizhao dialect is quite different from Shandong dialect in pronunciation. Rizhao dialect is one of the most difficult dialects for people to speak among the national dialects, and it was characterized by "large tongue". There are a lot of blade-alveolar and few retroflexion.
Due to its special location at the junction of Jiaoliao Mandarin, Jilu Mandarin, Zhongyuan Mandarin and Jianghuai Mandarin, Rizhao dialect subjects to different degrees of influence from the surrounding dialect, resulting in Rizhao dialect having the characteristics of different dialect around. This situation makes the ownership of Rizhao dialect controversial all the time. At present, the mainstream view is that Rizhao dialect belongs to Qingzhou piece of Jiaoliao mandarin or Changhui piece of Jilu mandarin.
Art
Rizhao Peasant Painting is a kind of traditional folk painting that began to develop in 1960s. It is created by peasants to reflect their county and fish lives with colorful lines. And there are many embroidery elements used in the painting. In 1988, Rizhao was first named by the Ministry of Culture as "the Rural Township of Modern Chinese Folk painting".
