What to Buy at Qinghai Lake

Dried Yak Meat (牦牛肉干)

Dried yak meat is the featured food in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Living in the area above 3500 meters all year round, yaks often eat wild herbs such as fritillaria, cordyceps and so on. Therefore, their meat is delicious and tasty. Dried and packed yak meat is convenient for carrying, it is the good choice of gifts to friends.

Cordyceps Sinensis/Yartsa Gunbu 冬虫夏草

Cordyceps sinensis which is a kind of very valuable herd which has much medical value. It is a traditional Chinese medicine which is used as a tonic to increase the body's natural resistance to disease. It has been exported to other countries for a long time. In Xining, you can purchase a bottle of medicated wine, including the Chinese caterpillar fungus and other rare medicinal materials. 

Yoghourt 酸奶

Yoghourt is a must-try when you travel in Xining. Different from what we often find in supermarket, Yoghourt of Xining is often in a solid state. However, it is extremely fresh and tender with a layer of cream on the surface. The flavor is fresh and appetite-boosting.

Salt Carving

Salt carving is carved from the crystal of salt in Chaka Salt Lake, shaping in simple geometric figures and animal images. It is a handicraft with local characteristics and has various colors.

There are many stands and shops in the scenic area, and towns near Qinghai Lake. The followings are recommended shopping places for Qinghai Lake.

Tourist Shopping Center in Erliangjian Scenic Area 二郎剑旅游购物区

Inside Erlangjian Scenic Spot, there is a street full of shopping shops. The products here are mainly tourist souvenirs such as jade, cordyceps, Tibetan ornaments and so on.  However, souvenirs sold in similar tourist attractions are generally expensive, and jewelry and other genuine items are mostly fake. Therefore, it is not recommended to buy valuables here. You can buy some favorite and cheap handicrafts as a souvenir. If you want to bring a hand gift to your friend, it is recommended to go back to Xining.

Chaka Salt Carving Stand 茶卡盐雕摊位

In addition to the beautiful scenery of the salt lake and the huge salt sculpture, you can also buy small salt carving crafts, which have simple salt crystals and larger animal images. The prices vary but they are all very exquisite. It is recommended to buy small and cheap ones. Large ones are expensive and easy to break or melt. It is not very valuable.

Dongzang Local Products Shopping Center 东藏土特产购物中心

Hiemahe Town 黑马河乡（镇）

Heimahe Town is located in the northwest of Gonghe County and the west of Qinghai Lake. It is an important town around Qinghai Lake. There is a road in the town, which is lined with hotels, commissaries and souvenir shops. Residents here are mainly Tibetans, and shops also mainly sell Tibetan goods, including Tibetan hemp, cordyceps and so on. However, the quality is not guaranteed, and expensive items are not recommended to buy here.
