Karamay Culture
Karamay is a modern petroleum industry city which develops along with the exploration and development of the first big oil field of new China. Karamay, it is the meaning of “black oil” in Uyghur language. It got the name owing to the Black Oil Mountain in the northeastern corner of the city. Karamay is the only city named after oil, and it is abundant in petroleum, natural gas, natural asphalt and other mineral resources, and it has the relatively scarce naphthenic crude oil.
Karamay is an immigrant city where 38 nationalities live like Han, Uyghur, Kazak nationality, etc. The total population here is 340,000, during which Han nationality accounts for 76.5% and ethnic group takes up 23.5%.
