Architectural Layout
Entrance
The entrance to Danfu Courtyard is marked by a monumental stone archway that is 16 meters tall, with a three-gate, hip-roofed design. The structure exudes grandeur and strength, symbolizing the significance of the cultural institution within the region. At the center of the archway is the inscription “东粤菁华” (Essence of Eastern Guangdong), while the two sides display the inscriptions “金声” (Golden Voice) and “玉振” (Jade Resonance), both written by the eminent scholar and calligrapher Rao Zongyi (饶宗颐), one of China’s leading cultural figures.
Beyond the archway, visitors encounter a set of three stone steps leading to the main hall. The courtyard area is lush with flowering plants, and the garden is adorned with a variety of symbolic stone sculptures, including the mythical qilin (麒麟), blue lion (青狮), coiled dragon (盘龙), and iron ox (铁牛), which represent auspiciousness and protection.
Main Hall
The central structure of Danfu Courtyard is the majestic main hall, featuring a double-eaved roof, glazed flying tiles, and four rose-red granite columns that give the building a sense of stability and solemnity. The hall’s centerpiece is a plaque inscribed with the words “淡浮院” (Danfu Courtyard) in gold lettering, created by Pujie (溥杰), the younger brother of China’s last Qing emperor. On either side of the entrance are wooden couplets, which read “远望观云,登高视野” (Gaze at the clouds from a distance, look far from the height), written by the famous calligrapher Zhao Puchu (赵朴初), who was also the president of the Chinese Buddhist Association.
Inside the main hall, visitors will find a diverse collection of cultural artifacts representing the three major Chinese philosophies: Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. These relics provide valuable insights into the rich spiritual and philosophical traditions of China.
Calligraphy Stele Forest
One of the most captivating features of Danfu Courtyard is the “Chinese Historical Calligraphy Stele Forest” (中国历代书法碑林), located along the sides of the main hall. This collection features authentic calligraphy works from some of the greatest Chinese calligraphers, spanning several millennia. The stele collection includes works from the Shang and Zhou dynasties all the way to the contemporary period, offering visitors a chance to experience the development of Chinese calligraphy over 5,000 years.
The stele forest is not only an artistic treasure trove but also a scholarly exhibition that allows visitors to witness the evolution of Chinese characters, calligraphy styles, and cultural aesthetics across different historical periods. It is a must-see for any visitor with an interest in Chinese art, culture, and history.
Jiaotai Hall
Above the calligraphy corridor is a spacious square with the Jiaotai Hall, which serves as the main exhibition hall for Danfu Courtyard’s collection. The name “Jiaotai” (交泰) is significant because it mirrors the treasure seal in the Forbidden City of Beijing, both of which are derived from the concept of “天地交泰” (the harmonious union of heaven and earth) found in the “I Ching” (Book of Changes). In addition to this traditional meaning, Jiaotai Hall also symbolizes the cultural exchange between China and Thailand.
The hall houses a group of golden Buddha statues known as the “Maha Mongkhon Buddha Statue” (玛哈蒙空佛像), which was personally gifted by the Thai King. In addition to these, the hall also displays a range of artifacts representing various aspects of Chinese culture, providing a diverse and rich cultural experience for visitors.
Yanfeng Academy
On the western side of Danfu Courtyard is Yanfeng Academy, a place where the calligraphy of Chinese masters such as Huang Miaozu (黄苗子) and Rao Zongyi (饶宗颐) is prominently displayed. Yanfeng Academy is not just an exhibition space; it also hosts regular lectures and training sessions focused on Chinese culture.
This academy provides visitors with an opportunity to immerse themselves in Chinese traditions and thought, while also offering a peaceful and serene retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. Guests can stay at the academy and enjoy the surrounding natural beauty, which is rich in mountains, clear waters, and lush vegetation.
Hundred Fruit Garden
Surrounding Danfu Courtyard is the Hundred Fruit Garden (百果园), a lush and vibrant area where visitors can enjoy the sight of rare and exotic flowers, unusual trees, and various fruit species. The garden is a perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural significance, providing a tranquil space for visitors to relax and enjoy the serenity of the environment.
In addition to its rich plant life, the Hundred Fruit Garden features traditional Chaozhou-Shantou tea cuisine, offering a chance to taste local delicacies in a beautiful setting. This space serves as both a cultural hub and a recreational area, making it a wonderful destination for both leisure and learning.
Cultural Importance
Danfu Courtyard is not just a place for historical and cultural exhibitions; it also plays an important role in the promotion and preservation of Chinese culture. The courtyard has become a popular destination for visitors interested in exploring Chinese calligraphy, art, philosophy, and the enduring legacies of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism.
