Chinese Visa Policy and Requirements for Citizens of Taiwan

I. Visa Requirements

Residents of Taiwan need to obtain specific travel documents to visit mainland China. These documents include the Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents (often referred to as the “Taiwan Compatriot ID Card”) and a travel endorsement. The permit is valid for ten years, while the travel endorsement typically has a validity period of six months.

II. Visa Application Process

  1. Apply for the Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents:
    • Applicants need to visit the immigration authorities in their place of residence in Taiwan to apply for the permit.
    • The application requires providing personal identification documents and completing the necessary forms.
  2. Apply for the Travel Endorsement:
    • After obtaining the permit, applicants can apply for the travel endorsement, which specifies the purpose and duration of the visit.
    • The endorsement application can be completed at designated service centers or online platforms authorized by the mainland authorities.
  3. Additional Documentation:
    • Depending on the purpose of the visit (e.g., tourism, business, study), applicants may need to provide additional documents such as travel itineraries, financial proof, or invitations from mainland organizations.
  4. Submit Application Materials:
    • Applicants submit their completed forms, permit, and additional documents to the relevant authorities for review.
    • The application process may involve biometric data collection, such as fingerprints.
  5. Review and Approval:
    • The authorities will review the application materials. If approved, the travel endorsement will be issued and attached to the permit.
    • Applicants will be notified of the approval status and can collect their documents.

III. Special Visa Policies

  • Exemption Policy: From November 30, 2024 to December 31, 2025, residents of Taiwan holding ordinary passports can enter China visa-free for up to 30 days for business, tourism, family visits, exchange visits, or transit.
  • Landing Visa Policy: China doesn’t offer landing visas to residents of Taiwan; advance application is required.

IV. Notes

  • Apply in Advance: Apply 1-2 months before travel to avoid issues from applying too late or early.
  • Material Authenticity: Ensure submitted materials are true and complete. False materials may lead to visa rejection.
  • Follow Policy Changes: Visa policies may change. Check the latest notices from the relevant authorities before traveling.
