History

Early Developments

In 2004, Anyang City started planning the construction of a civilian airport. The initial plan involved attracting Malaysia’s SenoMega Group to invest in building an off-site terminal, but this was eventually delayed due to reluctance from the investors to change the airport name.

In March 2010, Anyang City submitted a proposal to the Henan Provincial Government for the construction of Anyang Yudongbei Airport, which was reviewed and approved by the Civil Aviation Development and Construction Committee of Henan Province and the Provincial Development and Reform Commission.

By April 2011, the airport project was included in the “12th Five-Year Plan” for civil aviation in China, and in September 2011, the Chinese State Council included the airport project in the “Guiding Opinions on Supporting the Accelerated Development of the Central Plains Economic Zone.”

Key Milestones

  • 2012: In June, the preliminary review of the airport site selection was held. By November, the site was approved by the Air Force Command of the Jinan Military Region (now part of the Northern Theater Command).

  • 2013: In December, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) approved the Wagang site for the airport.

  • 2016: On November 4, the project received final approval for construction from the State Council and the Central Military Commission.

  • 2017: Construction began with the groundbreaking ceremony in December.

The project moved forward in 2020 with several approvals related to the feasibility study, planning, and construction.

Significance

Economic and Social Impact

The construction of Anyang Hongqiqu Airport has significant importance for the region, as it helps to adjust the local industrial structure, attract emerging industries, and promote the tourism sector. It is also a key infrastructure project to complete the airport layout in Henan Province, filling the gap for civil airports in northeastern Henan.

The airport directly serves 11.6 million people in Anyang, Puyang, and Hebi cities, and provides aviation services to approximately 60 million people within a 150-kilometer radius, including parts of Shanxi, Hebei, and Shandong provinces. This will improve the regional transportation system, boost the economy, and contribute to the development of new industries, including flight training, low-altitude tourism, aviation education, and custom travel services.

The airport also supports the region’s transformation and high-quality development by integrating air, rail, and road transportation into a modern and efficient system. It enhances the accessibility of Anyang, creating a “half-hour” transport hub for general aviation between Anyang Hongqiqu Airport, Anyang Yindu Airport, Anyang Yonghe General Aviation Airport, and Linzhou General Aviation Airport.
