Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics Venues

Beijing’s construction regulatory body released overall plans and deadlines of 2022 Winter Olympics Venues on May 31, laying the foundation for Olympic projects to advance. There  are a lot of the infrastructure from the 2008 Summer Games can be reused, saving the need to build another future ghost stadium. Three 2022 Winter Olympics Venues area: Beijing, its suburban Yanqing County, and the nearby Zhangjiakou. There will be 12 competition venues in total: 5 in Beijing, 2 in Yanqing, and 5 in Zhangjiakou. At the same time, there will be 13 non-competition venues: 7 in Beijing, 3 in Yanqing and 3 in Zhangjiakou.

Venues in Beijing

Beijing will host all the ice events (curling, ice hockey and skating) and four snow events (snowboard big air and freestyle skiing big air, men’s and women’s). There are 12 venues in Beijing, including 8 existing ones, 4 newly-constructed ones.

Beijing National Aquatics Center(北京国家游泳中心)

Also officially known as the National Aquatics Center,and colloquially known as the Water Cube, it is an aquatics center that was built alongside Beijing National Stadium in the Olympic Green for the swimming competitions of the 2008 Summer Olympics. Swimmers at the Water Cube broke 25 world records during the 2008 Olympics. It will host the curling at the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Beijing National Indoor Stadium(北京国家体育馆)

The National Indoor Stadium is an indoor stadium that is located in the Olympic Green in Beijing, China. The stadium was constructed for the 2008 Summer Olympics. It is nicknamed the Fan due to its design resembling a traditional Chinese folding fan. It is also used for basketball. At the 2008 Olympics, it hosted the Artistic Gymnastics, Trampolining, and Handball events. The stadium will be used for ice hockey during the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

Capital Indoor Stadium(首都体育馆)

The Capital Indoor Stadium is an indoor arena in 56 Zhongguancun South Street, Beijing, China that was built in 1968.  Capital Indoor Stadium has undergone a new renovation and expansion that was completed in late 2007 for the 2008 Summer Olympics, where it hosted volleyball tournaments. The venue is also used for figure skating, curling and ice hockey, which will also be used for the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Wukesong Sports Center(五棵树体育中心)

The Cadillac Arena(originally Wukesong Culture & Sports Center) is a multipurpose indoor arena in Beijing. It was originally built for the 2008 Summer Olympics basketball preliminaries and finals. The stadium has a capacity of 19,000 and covers an area of 63,000 square metres. The Women’s Ice Hockey competitions will be held here in 2022.

National Speed Skating Oval

The National Speed Skating Oval (The Ice Ribbon) is an arena which is the only new venue planned to be built on Beijing’s Olympic Green for the Winter Olympics. It will host the speed skating competitions at the 2022 edition of the Winter Olympics.

Venues in Yanqing

Yanqing, a suburban district of Beijing (80km to the northwest), is to host the alpine skiing and sliding (bobsleigh, skeleton and luge) events. There are 5 venues in Yanqing, all newly-constructed ones.

National Sliding Center(国家滑雪中心)

The Bobsleigh, Skeleton and Luge Tracks are within the National Sliding Centre, which is one kilometre or a five-minute ride from the Olympic Village. The venue will offer a seating capacity of 2,000 and a standing capacity of 8,000 to the spectators.

National Alpine Ski Center(国家高山滑雪中心)

The course for Alpine Skiing will be in the National Alpine Ski Centre, which is six kilometres or a ten-minute ride from the Olympic Village. The venue will offer a seating capacity of 5,000 and a standing capacity of 3,500 to the spectators.

Venues in Zhangjiakou

Zhangjiakou, further to the northwest in the neighbouring Hebei province, will host all the other snow events (snowboard, freestyle skiing, cross country skiing, ski jumping, Nordic combined and biathlon) in its Chongli district, a popular skiing destination. There are 8 venues in Zhangjiakou, including 2 existing ones, 6 newly-constructed ones.

Genting Snow Park A & B(云顶滑雪公园A和B)

The Genting Snow Park, located in the east of Chongli County of Zhangjiakou, is four kilometres or a five-minute ride from the Olympic Village. It has two venues : A and B. The Genting Snow Park A and B will be the venues for Freestyle Skiing and Snowboard competitions. The two venues will offer 5,000 fixed seats and a standing capacity of 2,500 respectively.

Biathlon Center(冬季两项运动中心)

The Biathlon Center will be located in Chongli District, Zhangjiakou city, Hebei Province. It is three kilometres or a five-minute ride from the Olympic Village. It will serve as the Biathlon competitions in 2022, with a seating capacity of 5,000 and a standing capacity of 5,000.

Nordic Center Ski Jumping Venue(北欧中心跳台滑雪场)

It is located in the east of Chongli in Zhangjiakou, three kilometres or a five-minute ride from the Olympic Village. The venue will offer 5,000 fixed seats and a standing capacity of 5,000. 

Nordic Center Cross Country Venue(北欧中心越野滑雪场)

The venue for Cross Country Skiing will be the Nordic Centre Cross Country Venue, three kilometres or a five-minute ride from the Olympic Village. The venue will offer 5,000 fixed seats and a standing capacity of 5,000.
